Hi all

I’m Mike from New Zealand. I’m beginning my camera journey. I already see it might be a life time obsession.

It all started with a pos Eufy full of false detections, no detections and I now realise crap image. Nice wide angle but at 60 feet no identification.

My next step on my journey is going to be 2 x IPC-T54IR-ZE S3 from empiretech Andy. After reading info here I decided these were the right cameras for me. I sent a dm to Andy and he came back with same models, so the hours reading the forums paid off. Eventually I will add a 3rd camera and maybe a NVR.

Being a newb I have some questions hopefully one of the guru’s here can answer.

  • the cameras will be standalone, do I use DMSS for setup?
  • I’m monitoring 2 entrances to my property. One of them is the entrance from the road. I only want a alert if a person or car comes across my property boundary, can I do this with standalone cameras?

Thanks in advance

Mike

Welcome!

You set up the cameras with a web browser - preferably Internet Explorer (yeah we know LOL but it is still available) or Edge with IE tab.

DMSS is only used for viewing and playback.

Yes you can do that with stand alone cameras, but notifying you with cameras brings a host of issues and why most here don't let the cameras touch the internet.

But what you will find is after 3 cameras, managing them is much better with a VMS system.

Thanks for the quick reply. Do you know what class micro sd card I would use?

Class 10 or UHS (Ultra High Speed) Class 1 (U1) cards or higher are recommended.

Ones designed for security cameras like Endurance cards are a good bet.

Many here have had good success with Samsung Evo Plus as well.

Another thing that will push you to a VMS sooner than later is the cameras struggle with 24/7 recording, but motion activated misses stuff. Plus you don't want to go over 256GB for the SD card.

Most of us have them in the camera for redundancy in the event the VMS system craps out.

See this great thread on how 24/7 recording is a better option:

I see what you mean about continuous recording, but at the moment the budget won’t stretch to a NVR. Hopefully in the not to distant future I can add one.

Thanks again
