Hoping for some advice on some adjustments I can make to my LPR camera

when you get a good plate picture make sure to write down your settings and try to change one setting at a time so you will see exactly what that change did. If you change more than one at a time you run the risk of not knowing which change made the difference. As suggested by several try raising your 3d, mine is default 50 and keep your 2d where you have it. keep the pics coming you are on the right track

Ranging from darn near to perfect , thx all for the advice. will keep tweaking a little every day but much closer today than i was at the start.

For those that read this later what ended up helping, bumping contrast and lowering sharpness and lowering to 1/1000. also switched to natural rather than outdoor WB

Though now with the pulled back zoom, starting to wonder if a 5442t could have been just as good seeingas i'm not having to max out zoom of the z12e.

that is a good feeling. Anyway I know you are probably going to do more adjusting, just write down the settings and put them in a safe place. you never know when your nvr, camera may crash.

Well what is your zoom setting on the Z12E?

The 5241E-Z12E is a 5-60mm lens while the 5442E-Z4E is an 8-32mm lens.

So to set the Z12E to 32mm the zoom setting is about 590.

Any more improvements?

This may be some good reading, 4K versus 1080p: License Plate Capture 4K Test (ipvm.com)

I wouldn't put much stock in something written in 2016, plus the article is saying they used default settings. None of us running LPR would use default settings. Plus I question in some of the night settings at 1/1000 shutter if gain was at 100 because those images should have been a lot darker.

Plus they were comparing some fixed lens to a varifocal. Not quite a fair competition

And they were doing digital zoom not optical zoom...

Most of us here would have OPTICALLY zoomed it to the area in red and not digitally after the fact:

I hadn't needed to toy with it for a long time, then my Home assistant integration stopped changing it to night mode at dusk. I fixed that and now i'm seeing a lot of wash out, so i'll have to tinker around a bit and see what is up. Thankfully can still barely make out a lot of the letters just not as "clear"
