So the wife, two pit bulls, two cats, and I moved again for the third and final time in four years. I have been walking around the new house over the last couple of weeks trying to figure out where I want to put cameras and what I want to capture. I think my plan is to keep all cameras off of the house and hide them on poles in the landscaping. This would give me views closer to the street and views looking back at the house. Our installer loves using poles in his installation on commercial properties to get better captures and he is excited about my idea. I will post some pics of the house this weekend if work allows.

Fwiw, I have turrets under the eve and you don’t even notice them unless you are close enough and look directly at them. No one ever looks directly in to them except for the people that know they are there. I have dark green fascia and soffit,l. The first turrets I bought were white and I painted them to match. Then I bought matte black ones and they blend in so well I’m just using black now in the front. I don’t use a junction box on them either so they are tucked up under the eve really well. My roof is a hipped roof so I’m sure that makes some difference and the cams are all verifocal a placed in the corners.

At the height, cameras would only serve as overwatch and not for facial ID.

I have 14 cameras and none of them are mounted on the house. You need at least a little bit of land to do this. About a half dozen are circled around the house to give close to 100% coverage, with the rest looking over other places on the property. 8 are in trees, one on a fence rail, one partially concealed in a retaining wall, and 3 on a small outbuilding. It's not a good setup for facial recognition, more for identifying vehicles, getting license plates, and watching the wild animals. The toughest part of the install was trenching for about a thousand feet of conduit. The 14th camera went into the chicken coop to see which hen was breaking the eggs. Turned out to be an invader bluejay.

It is fun having cams that aren't attached to the house. I've always wanted one, and earlier this summer I put one up finally on the back fence.



I used nearly 200 feet of Ubiquiti ToughCable Carrier, and only buried about 15 feet of it in conduit between the garage and fence. The rest simply lies on the surface along the fence line. I don't know how long the cable will last.

I am in a suburb community and the houses are closer than I would like. The goal is to do something a bit different, keep the wife happy, and to hide the cameras. Most will be on 4ft-5ft poles. I have a landscape island in the front yard so I can mount a couple of cameras 8-10 ft from the road, down low.

@gpower07 There is a guy in South Florida that has done crap work and ripped a lot of people off over the past 10-15 years. Anyone in the security camera world down here knows him. He just happens to have an old fire truck and ends up at car shows around here. I believe he came up in the wall of shame thread.

Excited for this pole situation! Show us the pics. Put a couple of decoy cams with lights on them on the house as well.... Just for eye candy.

is it just me or do you need more zoom on that camera? I like the idea of having cameras in the yard where no one expects them.
 
Sorry for taking a while on this thread, we were in Chicago last week for the GSX convention to check out some new stuff and to look for new vendors. I will get working on the house install here shortly.
 
@TL1096r I have a say in the installation process over at Night Hawk, particularly the layout. The layout is the most important part. You can use crap cameras to catch bad guys. They need to be in the right spot, at the right height, and they have to capture the entire incident. For us, we need to catch bad guys in the process of the crime, so we put cameras in places where we can see criminals before they enter the property, sometimes at the fence line. We use poles to get cameras away from buildings so we can catch someone as they are jumping a fence.

Sorry for the bad circles. This is what I have had in mind. I since changed some of the landscaping around in the back and I am in the process of freshening up the front landscaping. The transformer on the left side of the driveway is going to be a perfect spot for a 4ft pole and 3 cameras.
