Hikvision proprietary video format

Hello-

I have recently had a Hikvision system installed in my house, and I had a few questions about the proprietary video format.

1. Is there any way to turn off the Hikvision format, and just record in a format that can be played VLC or any other player? When my system was first installed, I was able to do this. Then the installer came round to put in new cameras, and I have been told that any recordings I make from the cameras HAVE to be in the Hikvision format.

2. For the Hikvision format files I do have, I have tried to use the player to convert them. When I drag and drop a Hikvision file into the Vplayer converter I get the message "This File cannot be converted." Any suggestions on what could be causing that? The files play on Vplayer just fine, and I have tried the converter on a dozen different Hikvision files.

3. Are there any other systems similar to Hikvision's which allow you to turn off the proprietary video format? My installer told me that 'all systems force you to use proprietary video format in case the video needs to be seen in a court', but I do not need the video files for court. I just need them to be able to be played on common players like VLC or Windows' players.

Thanks so much for any help.
