Hi All,
This is my first post here, hopefully it may be of use to other DS-7108N-SN users.

My goal was to set up some video monitoring for our home with a screen that is permanently on and viewable, with the ability to record and review if required. Further to that I wanted to be able view the cams from our smart phones.
To this end I purchased a HikVision DS-7108N-SN, 2 x HikVision cameras and a separate POE switch. (I'll put the details and firmwares at the end of the post), we already have an existing router as the backbone of our home network.

Problems encountered: & resolved
  1. My first problem was logging into the cameras and messing with them before logging into the NVR. The NVR's highest resolution is 1920x1080, I'd gone directly to the cams and set them to max resolution 2560 x 1440, this is incompatible with the NVR and caused me no end of problems just trying to get the NVR to recognise the cameras. I tried a connecting using various protocols (ONIVF and HikVision) but I could not get the camaera statuses to come online - after dialling the resolutions back to 1920 x 1080 I was able get the the cameras "online" on the NVR. EDIT: 12-DEC-2016. if you can't get a camera to to display try configuring the camera for 1280x720p. I found this actually works best with this NVR.
  2. Connecting the NVR to EzViz. I had no problem getting the cameras to connect to EzViz individually BUT the NVR wasn't able to connect - ideally I only need the NVR, that way I can get both live streaming and playback functionality. I found that the "Server address" must be populated for the NVR, set it to "dev.us.ezviz7.com" (pic attached). this can be done by clicking the custom checkbox, entering the address and then unchecking the custom checkbox. Also note that the NVR may default your gateway into the Preferred DNS Sever, I changed mine to 8.8.8.8 and the Alternate DNS Server to 8.8.4.4. I was then able to log into EzViz and add the NVR without any further problems.

Good News!!!
I had a few nice surprises along the way. I can log into the NVR from anywhere on the local network from any PC using IE and view & modify all the cameras quickly, this web access is actually better than the built in software of the NVR which is pretty basic.
I have iVMS-4500 on our smartphones with two settings for the NVR, one calls the local ip of our network and is very snappy for streaming at home, the other uses the Ezviz P2P solution, which works but does stream pretty slowly and is only used if we are away from home.
The POE Switch is great - it has 8 POE ports with a total wattage of 120W or 15-20 watts per channel dependant. There are two ports that are simply 10/100 switch ports, so that's for any pass through non POE networking you need. With just two POE ports being used its running as cool as a cucumber.
