Hikvision Image Problem and Skipping during playback

Hey guys
I have a new nvr DS-7608NI-E2/8P with 2 cameras DS-2CD2342WD-I
My recording settings are 1080p with full frame rate and quality to highest and h264+ enabled. Also its set to record motion detect only

Anywyay I've noticed that if I play back the camera in the garage and for example it records the car driving in, few seconds after it starts recording there is a skip/jump to a couple of seconds later in the video. So it's like lost 2 seconds of recording.
Anywyay is this a hardware issue or is this normal. Or has it got to do with the bitrate and quality settings.

Or has it it got to do with the nvr creating small video clips of the recoding and the part when it skips is the time when the nvr creates a new clip recording
 
what's your pre/post record timing set to?
Could be network bandwidth but I'm guessing with the PoE version of the NVR you're cabled direct to it?

Haven't checked but it would be the default setting. Should I change the pre and post to something higher And yes it's cabled directly to the nvr
 
Turn off H264+. I have experienced same problem. Just use standard H264 or H265. Seems like the extra processing required for + is just too much for the the NVR.
 
really? Mine's a 7608 E2 without PoE and running 8 1080P 2MP streams at 264+ without issues. I do find 265 gives moments where the odd camera image goes all psychedelic for very brief periods a couple times/day but not determined yet if its the camera end or the NVR. I'm running non-Hik cameras with Hik protocol support so its always possible the camera got too warm as the small cube type do run hot and the ones that have exhibited this more are in warmer areas.

Also found 265 doesn't display on the VGA monitor connected to the NVR where 264 does.
 
pre/post is 5sec IIRC so worth adjusting that so you get both sides of the movement captured (advanced button on the storage screen, per camera). When you notice the skip is it between video recordings? or during the same video session?
 
i've noticed that the skipping is between video saving recordings...meaning, you know how the nvr records the videos at a short intervals and then starts a new file.
so its basically happening as though the video buffer in the camera is getting lost before it gets recorded on the hard drive. and thats when the 2 second loss and picture skipping happens. (so far from what i can tell)
i hope that makes sense.
 
if its between recording files that's likely a function of the event trigger as it'll pause for a second or so before triggering again, I believe. Alistair may have better info to add. Meantime maybe worth tweaking the pre/post record timers if they are still at the default 5s/5s so you get one continuous file rather than several short ones, assuming I'm on the right track that is

i've changed the pre/post to 10s/10s, chnaged to h284 and reduced the quality to medium at 20fps.
so far i did a couple of tests and they seem ok. will check the footage tomorrow to see if its fixed up.
 
ok. bit of a update and any suggestion.

so far the changes are not bad. i checked some footage this morning and found only one part where it did the 2 second skip while using the playback either through the web browser or ivms software, so eg it skipped between 7:51.19am till 7:51.21am
however when i export the footage there is not skipping, however i do notice during those 2 seconds, where there is movement in the footage it sort of does a small distortion/fuzzy/ decoding??? part of the image (if that makes sense). and this only happened when the camera was in night mode using IR.

on a side note is there a way of increase the size of the recordings in the nvr? meaning insteading them being small chunks of say 20/30/50mb to making them say 100mb..?

another update, did some more tests and i was able to repeat the skipping, and once again, when you export/download the part, there is a bit of distortion around the movement part but not skipping. but you do see the skipping during playback
any futher suggestions?

you can alter the pre/post a lot more than 10/10 sec, mine's set for 30s pre and 2 or 5 min post, but part of my setup is to monitor my kitties and other visitors like this lovely fox yesterday morning. tbh only catching a brief period either side isn't too useful I find, better to catch a wider period as it shows where the target came from and went to and possible intent much better, not risking record triggers failing as the event unfolds and missing the action.

Might be worth turning off the + and run with just h264 for a while as someone else suggested and see if that helps on your NVR. The NVR will prioritise recording over playback so you may see some stalls during playback but distortion no unless the camera was struggling /noise on the power line to it/network congestion during recording. As said, my 7608 runs 264+ on all 8 channels with no issues but YMMV and all that.

my NVR is a Hik DS-7608NI-E2 without PoE running firmware V3.4.62 build 160503 at the moment. Full compliment of 8 cameras set for 1080P with audio running H264+. Pre/post recording set to 30sec pre, 2min or 5 min post and 28 day retain. 4 of the cameras covering important views have 32GB SD installed and configured for ANR so they can continue to capture if power trips or network disrupts and the NVR catches up on reconnect. All locations have local UPS to keep the cameras running but the back-link network is EoP, hence the SD cards. Network is all GBe as is the EoP AV1000 gear, with the NVR and cameras on a separate vLAN for isolation from the rest of my equipment, no internet outbound access for that network either.

The cameras are non-Hik but do support Hik protocols, so are configured to the NVR as Hik. Basic motion only, no line-crossing or other smarts.

Running 5 of these with 2.8mm starlight lenses (no IRcut mech tho):

Picture is great even in very low light, as you'd expect from starvis equipped units. They are all mounted indoors, some looking out to cover the perimeters. The latter 3 I note the audio on them is way better regardless of which mic is used, at least at the moment. Will investigate that further on the first group when I've time.

yeah i've tried different settings now and yeah although it doesnt happen all the time, i do still get the skipping when doing playback. if i check/download the recording the skipping doesnt happen, but you do notice sort of distortion briefly when that skipping is happening.

ok so i've tried all possible setting combination, ie reducing from 4mp to 1080p, reducing frame rate from 20 to 15, increasing -reducing bitrate, increase the pre/post record, montion on and off
i even reloaded the firmware etc etc.
however i still get the frame/seconds skipping and when it does happen in the downloaded file, there is the distortion in part of the recording.

Could there be a faulty NVR?

could just be the hdd isn't able to keep up with the streams as it buffers the writes while it assigns the next bucket of blocks to use...?

My cameras run at 3072 bit rate and 20 or 25 fps on the main stream running to a WD red 2TB drive and I've not observed the same behaviour but doesn't sound like a fault with the NVR. How full is the HDD, could be fragmented so the drive is working harder to allocate the next bucket to write to perhaps.
 
this is all brand new stuff. the hdd is a 4TB WD purple surveillance hard drive.
this distortion that im talking about, the best way to describe it, is as though some of the image is getting "decoded" and its sort of jumbled up. but yeah when you playback that part, its when you notice the skipping.

ok i've attached an example of the actual issue. this photo is of what you see when you actually download the video. when you watch it on playback that part is when it skips.
what do you guys think?

that looks like an encoding/decoding issue, you see the same on some video rips from BD/DVD etc as well as satellite feeds in poor weather. Could be that the NVR was busy doing something else too at the time or the camera was struggling to keep up with the image changes. Or perhaps an iframe got lost in transmission and that's the effect of the update frames applied against the previous iframe. That's my guess anyways, Alistair or someone else may have more to add.
 
yeah thats a good point. any solutions? the issue happens on all the resolution and quality/bit rate settings too.

i found someone else who has/had pretty much the same issue, just much much worse then me. i've noticed he has the same equipment setup as me too
