If you are doing a new camera system what are your requirements, like cover packages at the front door, identify car door checkers, Look at birds and deer in the back yard, collect license plat number driving down the street........

If you are not under immediate threat, do take some time to review the cliff notes as a starting point.

Start jotting down notes on what you want a security / surveillance camera(s) to do functionally for you.

Once you've done that it is a lot easier to better narrow down your options.

If you want to jump straight in, pick one one of the Dahua OEM 2MP starlight varifocal turret models to play with. ( example IPC-HDW5231xx )
