Help with Hardware Options

I have the option of getting 1 of 2 machines for a BI setup I am saving for. I will start smaller but probably grow into 15 cameras (13 x 4 MP and 2 x 8 MP). I plan to use sub-streams. Both systems are approx $350 and will need me to add surveillance HDD. I know either would work but I don't know when comparing if the more powerful CPU is better or more memory. I don't want to spend extra on any upgrades for a while if at all.

1) i7-8700, 24 GB of memory (all 4 slots used), 512 GB SATA SSD, Win 10 Pro
2) i5-11400, 8 GB of memory (both slots used), 256 GB nVME SSD, Win 11 Home

My concerns with the 2nd option is the memory. I can't just add, I have to remove and replace. Also, wasn't sure how many issues people are having with Win 11.

I vote for #1. I have 11 cameras on an older (i7 3770k) with windows 10 and it works like a champ. As we speak, I am trying to set up a newer machine with i5 12600k and windows 11. So far, nothing but a pita ( not with Blue Iris or the strd items...just having a heck of a time installing a Mellanox 10Gb nic). Also, if I am not mistaking, the i5 11400 has been noted in other forums as to running on the hot side.

Looking at the passmark cpu ratings... PassMark - CPU Benchmarks - CPU Mega Page - Detailed List of Benchmarked CPUs

I7-8700 is a 13046
I5-11400 is a 17115

so the I5 is 30+% faster than the I7. A BI system likes 16 GB memory. I would go for #1 with windows 10 pro and more memory, also a bigger SSD.

I run 17 cameras at between 10 and 15 FPS, substreams on an I7-4790 at about 22% CPU. Without deepstack.

Do you think CPU or memory is more important? I am probably going to be running Deepstack on some of my cameras.

8 GB of memory does not cut it in my opinion. You will need to add memory to the I5 system.

Also plan on adding a good harddrive to the system, at least a 4TB WD Purple. (~$95).

Personally I would also choose the i7 with more memory and Windows 10 Pro. The processor will be fast enough, especially with substreams. The extra memory and Windows Pro are the better options IMHO.

Dang I was too slow. i7 system is gone.

Turns out I have a 16 GB of memory from another systems I can use so I could get the i5 system and swap the memory, although Windows 11 concerns me some.

Decisions.....Decisions. LOL
