Trying to record all the time went to camera/ record checked video box chose continous and OK but am not getting red dot or any recording?

Sounds like you're referring to Blue Iris.
If so and it's version 5, then please read the built-in "help" files in Blue Iris. I've attached below pages 92-97 that covers the Shield, Profiles and Schedules.
