Trying to make sense of how to decide on what fixed focal length to get for a specific view. In the past I used a varifocal camera to get the zoom number and calculate the fixed focal length to get. No problem as the varifocal and the fixed focal model I was interested in had the same sensor- 1/2.8" 2MP.

But now I am considering replacing my 5231 varifocal turret with a 5442 fixed turret and want to get the same view, well as close as possible.

So I calculated that my current view with that said HDW5231R-ZE is at 940 and equates to about a 7mm lens. But the T5442 only comes in 2.8, 3.6 and 6mm. So I adjusted the view to 730 which is about 6mm and then it dawns on me- the T5442 has a different sensor and MP count of 4MP on a 1/1.8" sensor vs. the 5231 of 2MP on a 1/2.8" sensor. That is an apple to oranges comparison.

Any idea on the view I could expect? Would the apparent distance to a fixed point be the same, closer, or further?
