when using BI software how do I connect IP cameras to PC? For discussion lets say I have 5 cameras to hook up. What's needed and how to do? thanks Bentley

That is a really unspecific question so I can only give unspecific answers.

Generally, when I need to set up a camera I plug it in to the network and figure out what IP address it has. Some cameras will be assigned an address automatically by the router, while others will come from the factory with a static IP address. Then I connect to the camera with a web browser, turn off UPnP and any other horribly insecure networking functions, change the admin password, set up the video encoding options the way I want them. Then I assign the camera a static IP address (alternatively, I could set up DHCP reservations in my router) so that the address won't change unexpectedly. After all these steps, I then add the camera in Blue Iris by choosing the appropriate camera type from the dropdown list and entering the correct address, user name, and password for the camera.

Thanks for the response even thought I have no idea what you said yet. I'll try and make it bit clearer. I have a computer and some cameras. I mount the cameras then? Wires to computer? Wire to router? Wires where do they go? Bentley

The PC should be connected to the router with a network cable. The cameras should also be connected to the router with a network cable. If you have not enough network ports on the router, you can buy something called a switch and connect that to the router. The switch basically extends the number of network ports your router has. A network switch works more or less the same as a power strip or a USB hub. It gives you more places to connect devices.

You also of course have to power the cameras. For some cameras, this means using the included power adapter. However some cameras support PoE which means you can power them through the network cable by attaching one end of the network cable to a PoE switch (and the other end to a camera).

If you dont understand how to setup a Network perhaps you should consider hiring someone to install NETWORK cameras... your in for an uphill battle all the way to the finish line and then your still probably going to do it wrong.

paying for a little experience and knowledge will get you up and running much quicker than asking for step by step instructions from the public on the internet.

Wow so negative!!!!!!!!!! I didn't realize this group was the PUBLIC. I thought this was a place to learn get information and help from experienced people. Guess your not one of those helpful people. Thanks for the negativity it was very helpful. Bentley

PS: Thanks bp2008 your response was greatly appreciated. Bentley
