Do 4 cores deal with cctv substantially better than 2 ?

Hi there thanks for your help

Im looking at buying the hp elitedesk

The 2 options im looking at are:

the DT desktop mini with processor 4570T or the bigger usdt ultra slim desktop with processor 4570S

the only performance difference I can see is the mini has 2 cores and the bigger usdt has 4 cores

I would prefer the mini as its half almost twice as energy efficient but i dont want to sacrifice performance

So if I am using say 10 3mp ip cameras with BI will there be a substantial difference in handling capability of the 2 cores v 4 cores?

Well the dual core option has hyperthreading, which helps it catch up with the quad core a bit. But more importantly Blue Iris now supports Intel Quick Sync decoding for h264 streams so as long as that works then you should have no problem with the more efficient dual core. Whether the actual power consumption will be lower or not, I don't know, since the dual core would have to work harder.

That T processors is very weak, its equivalent to an i3 haswell. Even with hardware acceleration i think it will choke on 10 3mp cameras. Get an i5 haswell or haswell S processor.

Yes, cpu boss is looking at other factors like performance per watt and there is something wrong with their calculation.
4590 scores 7211 https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i5-4590+@+3.30GHz
4570T scores 4892 http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i5-4570T+@+2.90GHz
That is a 32 percent difference.
An i3-4170 scores higher than the 4570T http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i3-4170+@+3.70GHz

Thanks Fenderman you are quite right! Plus I have learned from experience always overspec on everything. But.......

I started my cctv expedition by reading most of Carls fantastic work at netowrkcameracritic and the great nuc article has stuck with me. I then read the epic nuc battle on this site where Fenderman emerged honourably victorious)
I was almost buting a nuc then I wasnt.....
Carl used Milestone and Fendermans battle involved BI So I concluded NUC may be ok for milestone but not the cpu intensive BI
However I really like fact that the nuc uses substantially less power / electricity and the elitedesk dm is similar in power consumption both with a 65w psu (dm has slightly higher av consumption but a better processor)

I made an inquiry to Ken at blueIris support on Saturday and he may have given us the answer :

Hi there Ive seen your reqs being i7 8gb ram If I want to rum say 9-10 3mp cams will I get away with Elitedesk dm desktop mini with an i5 4570T processor ? thanks Adam Ken kindly replied today :

It will all depend on frames/second etc. However with the latest versions, you can use Intel H.264 decoding and then recording direct to disc to save CPU cycles so I would imagine you to be in good shape. Thanks Ken


 
Well , im impressed with the results.
Not sure if BI screen would be open at this moment , should ask the poster this.
IT was at 55% i believe he wrote before HA

The processor he has in there is weak with a 3500 passmark. With blue iris displaying and rendering the cpu should be much higher even with ha
 
im not so into cpu whats better and not, just checking the numbers.
What i am looking for at this moment is the cheapest solution that can handle about 7 - 8 cams and uses the lowest power.
This 9Watt he says it draws is a very low figure for 10 cams if thats really 30Mp

Something about those numbers doesnt add up....Do you intend to keep blue iris minimized.
Also, you will not save enough using the NUC. An i5-4590 with an efficient supply will draw 25w at 30 percent. Thats not even using an S or T processor. So you are saving between 16 and 32 dollars a year on average. How many years will it take you to make your money back considering that the standard system costs 300 with OS.
 
Electricity is more expensive here as where you probably live.
0.25€ per Kwh.

And yes, i do not have BI maximized.
Just in my home automation system i have some screens running when asked for it.
Rest i will open when it is needed, or by the app on my phone.
When there is something i need to see,find i will open the bigger screen for it.
This is how i always do it in my situation so it will save some cpu as well.

Im planning to put in the pico psu i have laying around to see what it does.
What is the best less power hungry computer that i can put together but can hold about 7 - 8 cams that vary between 2 - 4 Mp in your opinion ?
It's is also not that i need the computer right away since the house is still under construction, still i am already checking out/ asking / reading what could be the best solution since i am going to start from 0

That processor scores a 7479 at cpubenchmark.net, putting it about in line with a 4th or 6th generation i5 (except the i7-4785T would draw less power). That sounds okay. But I offer a word of caution about very small form factor PCs with powerful CPUs. Their cooling systems may not be designed to run continuous heavy loads. I once bought a Gigabyte Brix GB-BXi7-4770R which is about this size of an Intel NUC and its CPU scores 9816, putting it right up there with the best desktop i7 chips. But under any significant load, it would heat up all the way to the limit and the clock speed would be neutered in an attempt by the system to cool itself down. That machine also claimed the life of one stick of RAM and a 2.5 inch hard drive which I suspect both died from heat. Now to be fair that was a 65 watt CPU while the i7-4785T is a 35 watt CPU so things may be different.
