Hey all, spent all of last weekend trying to figure this out, but am now turning to posting here to see if y'all can help.

To jump right into it, I can't get deepstack to work for the life of me. I haven't gotten a single actual detection, where it told me it was a person or car. I'm using the GPU version 2021.02.1 and I've tried the CPU version, with no change. I've lost count how many times I've reinstalled BI and deepstack.

Here's a slew of general info, configuration pics, logs and such.

My camera is just a Chinese camera, a Capture R2-4MPIPEYE, from a business supplier. Frigate detection works just fine on Home Assistant, so the camera doesn't seem to be a problem.

BI version: 5.4.9.14 (started on 5.4.9.9 and have tried older versions which changed it from "Deepstack: 100" to "nothing found"..)

Computer specs (old gaming laptop):
CPU: Intel i7-3610QM
GPU: Nvidia Geforce GTX 660M / 2GB GDDR5
RAM: 8GB DDR3

It's an old laptop, but it doesn't seem to be struggling at all so far. I freshly installed W10 on an m.2 SSD, debloated it, disabled updates, added some performance tweaks, etc.. It does nothing but run BI.

BI log snippet:

At first I thought it was because zones wasn't setup, but I turned it on with no change.
1627149176263.png

I've had "to cancel" blank, added "giraffe" just to see what would happen. Have had the confidence high/low, doesn't matter. Have tested real time images at 5, 10, 20.
1627149185830.png

So BI is detecting everything, but Deepstack just won't identify what it is.
1627149199979.png

The last thing I can think of is this is too long of a detection time? I know it's not super fast, but I don't really care are how long it takes (within reason), as long as it detects.

Hoping I've given enough information. Any help is much appreciated, thanks!

That processor is too slow.

Server Error 100 means it timed out. Usually does that around 5,000ms and yours at over 12,000ms, so it is timing out.

You need to either abandon DeepStack or get a faster CPU.

But short term you could change the DS mode to low and I believe the latest BI version allows you to set a time to analyze, so make it like 20 seconds, but this unit will struggle.

Are you using the computer for anything else? Have you done EVERY optimization in the wiki including using substreams?

Post a screen shot of your BI camera status page that shows FPS, bitrates, and KEY.

Running BI on a laptop is not a good idea to start with. The processor will throttle as it heats up and given that it gets no breaks because it is constantly processing multiple video streams it will heat up fairly quickly. Add in running DeepStack, which is also processor intensive, and the CPU will slow to a crawl. What you're seeing, IMHO, is a result of an old, slow, processor throttled back by heat allowing DeepStack to time out.

You may be able to mitigate it a little if you load the GPU version of DeepStack since there's an NVidia card in the machine. Be aware that there is more to just the DeepStack executable. Several add-ins from NVidia are also required before installing the GPU version.

I do have the GPU version loaded.

It's just an old gaming laptop that has been sitting around, so I thought why not try it haha

Then the machine, CPU, just isn't up to the task. I use the GPU version and see detection times as low as 55ms on an i7-6700K using a GTX970. Any idea what the CPU temperature is?

Alright. Yeah, this is just an old gaming laptop I had laying around, was hoping it could at least kind of do it.

I am running the GPU version btw, I've tried the CPU version too. I stated I wasn't using the computer for anything else.

We have seen many times people say they are not using it for anything else and they have done EVERY optimization, and once screenshots and further discussion has happened, we find that isn't the case, so just confirming that you do not have this machine doing anything else LOL.

But I think there isn't much you can do with that CPU and it being a laptop.

Drop your FPS down to 15FPS. 25FPS is faster than movies for the big screen is shot on. Probably won't help enough, but worth a try since you are trying to make it work. Also drop the bitrate of the substream.

haha, I mean I'm sure I haven't done every optimization, but it legit doesn't do anything but sit here recording through BI.

But yeah, it's from 2012 and I've put it through the ringer over the years. I'll make those adjustments and see if I can get this ancient thing to just work once :p

Thanks for the help. If I can't get it to detect at all, I'll look at getting an old Dell workstation. Just was hoping free might work.

One would be surprised how much collectively the optimizations help and how just skipping one that someone doesn't think is important is a big CPU user LOL.

A member here was running 50 cameras with an i7 4790 and was at 100% CPU and was looking for recommendations for a new machine. After strong persuasion by many of us, he reluctantly agreed to do every optimization and is now at 30% CPU. Direct-to-disc and substreams are a must....

I tested BI on an old laptop older than this and could get 4 cameras going on it, so one camera should be fine (although we do not recommend laptops long term LOL, but if it is one camera and an old laptop you have just sitting around, give it a try)/

You're asking too much from a laptop. A used business class Dell, HP or Lenovo is a much better choice and cheaper than building your own.
Actually, I wasn't looking at the right sensor, it says it's averaging 52C. 105 was the max it will allow it to touch.

After I commented that, I was like, this can't be right lol

Under the Blue Iris Tab, select DeepStack tab, and then playback an alert and it will show the screen like above (copied here):

You can verify that DS is running in the AI tab in the BI system configuration window. Just click on the link there.

There's a hyper link there to confirm DS is running using your default browser. It seems to move with revisions and I'm not sure where it is on the AI tab, but if I remember correctly it's sort of halfway down on the let side.
