Dahua PTZ vs motor lifespan

Hello guys,

I’ve just installed my Dahua PTZ and going through the available options: scan, tour etc.

My question: is it a good idea to have a continuous scan or tour (with stops in between) running all day and night? I'm worried about the camera motor packing up

NO it is not a good idea. The camera will always be looking the wrong way.

Much better to use a fixed camera to tell the PTZ where to look.

They rate these at like 250,000 cycles (or maybe 450,00 but there is a number) and then the software only allows manual movement to not destroy the camera, so 24/7 moving will kill it before its time.

If you have an NVR, then you need to be looking for in the PTZ camera settings on the NVR for something like PTZ Linkage and then you assign the fixed cam to the preset.

hmmm, just looked at this but this is BI specific and I dont use it with my cams

But you do need some sort of VMS system in order to do this.

Dahua motors are generally not easy to break
Only the belt has life problems
The belt is not expensive, it is more troublesome to replace.

True but that doesn't fix that the firmware will shut down the movement after so many cycles, unless you found a way to override it?

I was aware of a message pop up to say something like "movement overtime" or other Chinglish, but you're saying that it actually stops the PTZ function from working at all ?
Do you have any which are doing this ?

Thankfully mine haven't got that far yet, but we have seen people come here with both Hik and Dahua that have had that happen and I think one person said it became a fixed cam at that point and another said autotracking and scanning stopped, but could move it manually.

Ah yes, found a thread from 2021 with Speed666 resetting it.
Well if it happens to my not really a PTZ SD2 model then I'll take a look.
But so far the stats are pretty minimal but interestingly most of them were hidden on the page by Javascript.
