Dahua NVR RS232?

Does the RS232 port on the back of the Dahua NVRs require a null modem cable or a straight thru RS232 cable? The reason I am asking is I am planning to upgrade the firmware on my NVR5208-8P-4KS2 which is still running version V3.216.0000004.0, Build Date: 2018-12-29. I plan on upgrading using downloaded firmware on a thumb drive, but I want to be prepared just in case I have to access the NVR with Putty and terminal.
