Connecting Hik NVR directly to MacBook

Noob question:
Anyone have success connecting LAN out of Hik NVR (7716NI) to a MacBookPro using crossover ethernet? Thought all it would require was turning off wifi, connect x-over cable, manually set IP in Macbook network/ethernet settings, then enter NVR IP in browser. But no luck.
Just want a way to bench top without lugging around a monitor etc. in certain situations.

just use a normal patch lead, if the NVR is 192.168.1.1 set the mac to 192.168.1.2 255.255.255.0 no gateway or DNS require.... well it works for me

check in the terminial with ifconfig and ping 192.168.1.1
