just purchased all this and about to start putting it all together. Wondering how well this can handle 64 cameras?

How many MP?
 
state says minimum must be 1280 x 1024 at 12fps but I'd like to go as high as possible. 1920 x 1080 at 12 fps would be nice
 
soooooo then, for the next system build I do, think the Ten-Core Intel® Xeon® Processor E5-2660 v3 2.60GHz 25MB Cache (105W) could handle 1080p ? or maybe even the Twelve-Core Intel® Xeon® Processor E5-2690 v3 2.60GHz 30MB Cache (135W)

I dont know anyone who has actually used 64 1080p cameras...i would test it and see...thats is the only way to know...it would also depend on how many cameras were recording at once...you would have to split the write load over the four drives...
 
I have an E5 v2 8 core. My setup is 18 (mostly 1080P) all at 15fps cams. It's running at about 33%, occasionally spiking higher. I tested it with just 9 cams and the CPU dropped to 17%. Doing the math that means my CPU should be able to handle somewhere around 50 cams. So IMO I would think one of the CPU's you listed should be able to handle 64 cams but it would be close. If not I would think you would be able to slightly tweak some settings to make it work without compromising too much.
On a side note my CPU was running at about 70C with a fairly standard air cooler. I switched to a fairly decent liquid cooler and temps dropped to 35C which also dropped my CPU % usage more than I would have thought.
 
I'd love to hear the results of this. There is not a lot of data about how well Blue Iris performs on CPUs that powerful, or with that many cameras (at any resolution). But if I had to guess based on personal experience vs benchmarks of the CPUs you mention, you would be lucky to get 64x 1080p @ 12fps on even that 12 core setup.

I run about 60 megapixels at perhaps a 5 FPS average with 40% of an i7-3770k, for what it is worth. Based on that I think the 8 core machine you specified above should be able to handle 64x 1.3 megapixel cameras at 12 FPS, but you might be pushing the limits. You nearly double the requirements by bumping those up to 1080p (2 MP). There are a lot of other software options that cost $$ per camera but they may perform a LOT more efficiently than Blue Iris. Of course 64 camera licenses of a high end NVR software is going to cost a lot more than the server you put it on, and may even rival the cost of the cameras too, depending on what you are buying from where.

When you have this many cameras and that much data, though, other things may become a concern besides CPU speed. Assuming 4 Mbps average bit rate for each camera you would be pushing 256 Mbps of data which would be about 20 TB per week if recording continuously on all cameras.
 
yeah this is all kind of an experiment for me. this is gonna be a smaller system for now, but my next build which will be a much much larger system I'm probably gonna go with 2x SuperStorage Server 6028R-E1CR12N each with 2x E5-2640 v3 2.60GHz. We'll see....
 
Subbing for the thread to see how well it handles the load and how the load goes up. Please post results for multiple combinations if you have 64 cameras at your disposal.

From the testing I've done my self, CPU growth doesn't seem to be linear as you add cameras, so you can't really calculate 15 cameras at 33% load equals to 30 cameras at 66% load. Not sure if this non-linearity was caused by software or hardware though, so eager to see the results.

BI doesn't seem to be able to take advantage of HT, at least on my system. Maybe because my cpu usage is low to begin with.

My E5 8 core shows an even spread across all 16 threads on resource monitor.
 
errrrrr... so I've gotten 40 cameras added so far and the CPU is staying at around 25% .... i really i hope i'm not fucking something up haha, cuz this is pretty great so far

What is the power consumption on it with that load? Which CPU did you end up going with?

Also, what resolution and frame rates are you using?

I'm also interested in resolutions, framerates, bitrates and recording/recorder configuration (24/7?,Server side motion detection?,Using the server as local client?)..
