Camera Recommendation For This Corner?

This is the back corner of the house/garage junction, viewed from the corner, approximately where I think I'd put a camera:

That line represents about thirty feet. The location is labelled "Back Door," in the drawing below, for reference:

Any recommendations for a camera to cover that? I'd like something more discreet than the 5231s I'm using everywhere else outdoors. A horizontal FoV of ±90° is preferable. A vertical FoV that gets me to those two paths at the top of the frame is desirable. The Dahua IPC-HDBW4231F-AS with a 3.6mm lens I have in the family room would probably be perfect, but it's a dome.

There's a total of 2600 to 3000 lumens of motion-activated light on the soffit near the upper left of the photo.

I'm partial to Dahua Starlight cams, but not married to them, necessarily.

Will the camera be installed beneath a soffit out of direct sun/rain?
If so, the twin-camera wedge (the "booby" cam) might work well.
It's a lower profile mini-dome format, which is why I ask about the location.

It will, but we are in a dusty, pollen-y area. (A few nights ago the pine tree pollen was so dense it actually triggered one of the 5231s.) I don't know as a dome would be a good idea, outside.

I'd be more inclined to the 4231 than the "booby" cam. A mini-turret wedge with the same specs would be ideal, I think.

Hi @Dramus

Hard to really find discrete security cameras which are good.

While I really like the mini-domes, they have IR leds inside the dome - and thus I prefer to use mine where I have light around the clock and it can remain in color mode to reduce any issues with internal IR reflections into the lens.

For your setup I would consider a IPC-HDW4xxx series camera, it is a bit smaller than the IPC-HDW5231xx and the IPC-HDW2231xx models as it is fixed lens. A 3.6mm should give you about 90 degrees FOV. ( I would pull 2 cables to that location, just in case you decide to go with more than one IP device there )

5231: 122mm x 104mm
4231M-ASE: 106mm x 94mm: 11% smaller than the 5231, 17% larger than the 4231M
4231M: 93mm x 79mm: 24% smaller than the 5131, 14% smaller than the 4231M-ASE

(N.B.: Numbers are rough.)

Bugs are attracted to the IR leds and thus will fly around the lens.. and spiders will setup shop ... if the IR led is set away from the lens - you'll have less bugs in front of the lens.

also, people have mentioned that the IR led ring make a "IR hot spot" and does not spread the IR light as well as the larger "bulbs".

Interesting, because the el-cheapo Reolink I have running in the garage, with a ring o' LEDS, seems to have more dispersed IR illumination than my Dahua cams.

In any event: I'm not certain it matters. I could possibly turn the IR off on this one, because nothing is getting anywhere near it in the evening w/o triggering the motion light that's about 20' away.

Hi @Dramus

Just general notes from what I have been reading. I'm certain that there is some variation in the IR LED rings and dispersion. Seen mention of this also for Hikvision cameras - so not necessarily a particular brand issue.

Probably one of the best solutions for night time viewing with domed cameras, are external IR lights. I recently purchased a Loryta (dahua) SD22204UE-GN that does not have internal IR, and is domed. It has PTZ and 4X zoom ability that works very well, provided you have external IR. The nice thing is, it replaced and 5231 with a PFA 137 junction box. All I had to do was swap the cameras.

if you are using a write motion light, if it is very bright it will blind the camera for a few seconds as the camera adjusts to the light.
I do not use motion lights, the light is on all the time.

Yes, I'm aware of that. The other problem is every time they fire up they cause motion detection. That's not so bad, but then they generate another motion event when they shut off

Besides the energy expenditure there are two downsides to that: 1. Light pollution. 2. In the summertime: Bugs.

The coach lights we have in front, on the porch and either side of the garage door, have an optional dusk-to-dawn low brightness setting. They'll come on at about half brightness from dusk-to-dawn and go to full brightness on motion detection. Seemed like a neat thing. Yeah: Not so much. They quickly become covered with spider webs and other bug goop.

That being said: The turret I think I like does not appear to be easily-obtainable. So I may have to choose another option. Perhaps take a look at Hikvision.

Guess I'm gonna have to find another solution. I'm informed by Andy my preferred camera is no longer in production. Oh well: Back to the drawing board. The need wasn't immediate, anyway. Maybe Dahua will come out with something similarly sized and spec'd, only mo bettah :)
