camera mounting suggestions

im adding a nest outdoor camera by my garage hopefully by tomorrow.

looks like I may have to drill a hole so the USB connection can be routed to the inside of the garage and plugged into the same socket as my garage door.

im set with where and how to mount the camera. that's the easy part for me. the part where im not sure is how do I create a seal(?) or cover the hole that I am making because once the "round" usb part goes through the hole, the nest outdoor cam wire will be too small to fill the hole I made.

I need input as to how I can cover the hole once I have the cabling in. am not sure what to look for at home depot.

im thinking I need to seal the hole so nothing untoward happens inside the garage let alone, the wife notices I made another hole in the house!( she wasn't too happy with the holes I made to route drains from my 150 gallon salt water tank.)

I consider myself handy but far from being a carpenter, so my apologies in advance if my question is vague or bordering ignorance.

Look for a squeeze tube of silicone window/door caulk.
 
get a PoE camera and you can run an unterminated ethernet cable through it..

Nest sux.. it'll be totally worthless where you intend on installing it and you'll be paying monthly for a driveway camera that cant identify anyone in your driveway.

yup ive seen your write-up and its quite popular and long I cant find time to peruse over it. plus I cant seem to find pricing for the camera on your write-up outside of a google search. I seem to find pricing at around 500+ which way out of my budget.

I am not paying for nest subscription. im within my return window though.. if can find time to read through your dahua write-up and know where to get the cameras at a good price Ill probably try them. another thing that may have discouraged me is the overseas ordering(?) ive been burned before with overseas orders...

I have no experience with that vendor; but I do with shipping from china.. ePacket typically takes 2-3 weeks and DHL 3-4 Days to the USA

Then how ever long it takes to ship out, if they have it in stock usually 2-3 days to get it out the door.. otherwise right now your looking at 2-3 weeks for them to get it in stock from the manufacturer.

If they dont have it on the shelfs and you do epacket, it could take a couple months before you see anything.

Another option might be to open the Nest to see if you can disconnect the cable from the circuit board. The cable-to-PCB connector is probably smaller than the USB connector.

I agree with the others about the quality of Nest video coverage. A "real" camera gets better user reviews than the nest....

^^ this guy drills large holes in his house to so he can keep the warranty on a cheap consumer electronic device..

how are you getting USB all the way to your garage?

With that magnetic mount nest cams were practically made for baseball bats :cool:
 
They have special magnets that work on aluminum bats.

Watch the video of this guy burglarizing a home. It's daytime and he gives a Nest cam the easiest shot at his face you could imagine while "sneaking" up on it in the back garden. ID quality sucks under great conditions.

Any camera is better than no camera except when you absolutely need a quality ID shot and having a shitty cam prevented you from buying one that'd get the job done. If someone left the scene and you don't know them then you NEED a quality ID. Not on every camera, but just ONE money shot where it's important. Properly selected cams on choke points are needed.

My rule of thumb for ID is one cam per entry door (usually 3.6mm), plus one per driveway (min 6mm), and then fill in blind spots and other areas of interest like outbuildings, back gates, play areas, etc and some indoors. Keep pixel density at 100ppf for facial ID.

www.ipvm.com/calculator works well for that.

thank you for all of your inputs. i will keep in mind the ideal cameras you all are suggesting when my older Logitech Alert reach their end of life. i for sure will need help selecting indoor IP cameras and start rebuilding my security setup from thereon.

At this point, i am still figuring out how and where to run my cables should i change out the NEST cams. i find joy in doing stuff myself. unfortunately having to use IP cameras that this kind forum is suggesting will take some time for me to get up and running.

i wished i found this forum first instead of going over CAM-IT which was my resource then, 5 years ago. looks like its dead now.

It's really not that hard to get quality IP cams working and we're happy to help! This forum just has a low tolerance for low quality cameras and cameras that aren't a good value from a cost/performance perspective.

If you still have the option to return the nest cam, do yourself a favor and seriously consider it.
