Blue Iris went a little crazy - trying to get settings back

Getting the hang of it

So a few days ago I noticed clips/alerts were not being saved anymore. The iOS app worked, desktop client worked, but nothing was being saved. I looked at the BI settings and somehow the clip/alert folder was changed to the G: drive and the E: Drive. this computer has C: and D:, no G: or E:. I was puzzled. I was getting alert/error messages saying "disk not ready".

So I changed the settings back to the D: drive. Its been a while since I set up BI or really looked at the desktop client because it was just working.

What is the optimal way to set up alerts/clips? I basically have exterior cameras recording 24/7 and my interior cameras only record when the profile gets changed to setting #3 (this is controlled via a home automation system).

I see on the bottom of the desktop client in red "!! D: -4.62T, C: +26.0G" - assuming that means 4+ TB on the D drive and 26 G on the C Drive. I want this all to be on the D Drive as you can see, its much larger. Does this mean it is set up correct?

I am not getting those "disk not ready" notices (likely because I Switched drives) but I am getting "Delete: Nothing to do" messages - why would it be deleting if I still have tons of storage space left? Why did my settings get all wacky after running stable for a solid 2+ years?

Thanks!

Hard to say what changed. Hardware errors and corruption do occur sometimes despite our best efforts.

If you look at your status window in Blue Iris there is a tab for disk status that shows your usage and allocated space a lot more clearly than the little text status. I think that means your D drive is overallocated by 4.62 TB and C drive has 26 GB free, or something like that.

I suggest just recording everything to the "New" folder and allocating all your available space to that. Set it to delete from the New folder once it is full. Take away any allocation assigned to the Stored folder and tell Blue Iris to move files to the New folder once the Stored folder is full -- that way you shouldn't lose anything from your Stored folder.

If your "Alert"s folder isn't empty, then leave a few GB allocated to that.

I went into "Clips and archiving" tab:
Database is D:\Blue Iris\DB (again I changed that back to D a few days ago)
- auto protect flagged items unchecked
- log clip movie/delete details and compact/repair db each day are checked
For Folders
New:
D:\Blue Iris\Recordings 2 (again i changed to D and made the "2" folder also a few days ago)
- do not monitor free space is unchecked
- I have limit size of 5000 GB and limit clip age is unchecked
Stored:
C:\Blue Iris\Storage
- do not monitor free space is unchecked
- Limit size is 20GB and limit clip age is checked and its 14 days
- delete is selected
Alerts:
c:\blueiris\alerts
- do not monitor free space is unchecked
- limit size is 1 GB and limit clip age is checked and its 7 days
- delete is checked
Aux folders are all empty/blank

Guess I am unclear on the difference between recordings, storage and alerts. They all sound somewhat similar to me :-)

So I am thinking storage and alerts I need to change to the D drive too? I have a 6 TB drive for the D Drive but I capped BI at 5000 GB (5 TB) just to leave some room (I remember reading it was smart not to max out your drive).

Previously how I had it set up (I forget how I did it which is why I am asking) I was able to store recordings for close to 2 months before they started to auto delete the old files. So looking to get back into that mode so to speak....

There can be performance implications when a drive gets very near full -- I've seem recommendations to not fill past 80% but I don't know what genuine benefit there is to that. I just don't worry about it and don't have any problems. Especially for Blue Iris recording storage that shouldn't be such a big deal. I let my storage drives fill nearly to capacity, with just a few GB not allocated to Blue Iris.

In your configuration for the "New" folder, have it delete when full instead of moving to the "Stored" folder. By default it moves files to the stored folder but there isn't a great reason for it to do that- it just makes things more complex.

You can uncheck the "Log clip move/delete details" box to reduce spam in your log file if you find it bothersome.

"Alerts" are created when a camera is triggered (usually by Blue Iris's built-in motion detection). In some setups this just happens in the clip database and your Alerts folder remains empty; with other configurations you have Jpeg snapshots show up in the Alerts folder.

Ok thanks - and since I only want to use the D drive (with the 6 TB Drive) then I should change those other folders for storage and alerts? I wouldnt be using storage per se but I'd still be using the alerts folder and that seems to be on the C Drive now

You ideally want just the Operating system, the Bi database, and the BI program on the C: Drive.
Then all else/video clips should record to the D: drive.
thanks - pretty much did that this weekend and it seems to be working fine

thanks again to the forum for the refresher!

I had a similar thing happen when windows decided to change my internal second hard drive to E: instead of D:.
My DVD drive is now D: - go microsoft!

I record to C: my SSD drive and move them to stored on D: or well... now E:
So, It might be windows that changed the Drive ID and not BI.

Remember, MS says Win10 is a "service" so they just "serviced" you with that drive letter swap. Question is, who's smoking the cigarette?

yeah i didnt say it was BI's fault or Win10 fault, just realized it happened. at least I got the notices so I could change it, just took me a while to refresh myself on what/why to change

How can I clear this red error. I had to change computers and I was storing everything on the G drive now I'm storing it on the S drive but I have this error.

you need to change the folder in clips and archiving. This has nothing to do with the Original post.

the original post has the red status issue also. and what you are saying to do isn't what i need to do. Everything is stored in S drive now not G drive.

once again, not related..the OP has a spontaneous issue..you moved systems and failed to change settings and or rebuild the database...check your settings in the clips and archiving tab and or rebuild the database.

no i think you dont understand how blue iris works...read the help file...you stated what happened in your post. I gave you specific instructions which you failed to follow...good luck to you...you cannot get help if you refuse to follow direction.
