Any HP elite, HP Prodesk, Dell Optiplex i5 4570 or higher performance per PassMark - Intel Core i5-4570 @ 3.20GHz - Price performance comparison. Also usff is always the best fit and are often quiet by design. I have 8 cameras running off of a Prodesk i5 4570 at 60% CPU usage running 25fps. Paid $250 on eBay.
The larger ones are quieter...note you want the sff or tower not usdt which only has room for a 2.5 drive...

@fenderman how would do your physical drive layout design in an SFF box? Let say for an 8 cam, a 16 cam, and a 24 cam system. 500GB + 2TB, 500Gb + 3TB, 500GB + 4TB respectively? SD cards for backup? Or a 3rd drive in the box?

The box cannot hold that many drives..a dell sff system can only hold EITHER a 2.5 or a 3.5 drive...you can squeeze in an ssd since it doesnt require mounting..the 5040/7040 have m.2 slots.
If you want two 3.5 drives you will have to go with an HP tower system...
see the dell/hp spec sheet...

@fenderman I would appreciate your opinion. I want to setup BI for 4 M3105-LVE Axis IP cameras at 1080P. I have a spare computer. It is a i5-3570k. I can upgrade it to a i5-4590 for $240 plus $119 for Windows 10 or $199 for Windows 10 Pro. I live 30 miles from a Microcenter. I was looking at their computers and found a couple that could be good BI servers.
Micro Center - Computers and Electronics
Micro Center - Computers and Electronics
Micro Center - Computers and Electronics

Given those prices. It looks like it would be better to buy one of these. I've been building computers since '92. Though I am not against buying pre-built in this case.

Which one of these would you suggest?

Hi, I'm new here at ipcamtalk, I'm looking at ebay and another places for an optimal PC to run exclusively as a BI server, with a capacity of up to 12 1-4 Mega pixel cameras at 20-30 FPS, storage capacity of up to 5 days of video recording (is good idea to record on an SSD drive?), other special requirements are: best price (below $500, not overbuild), very quiet (no fan noise at high CP usage or minimal, it will be near my bed!) and energy efficient (less watts to cut my bill).

Based in some comments here I think I need some thing like an i5 6500 system, and came with some offers like this:
1) USED HP PRODESK i5 TOWER.400 G3-6TH GEN 3.20GHZ.6500 CPU.8GB 500 HD-WIN 10 PRO,DVD+RW : 299.99GBP (About $386.68 USD)
2) HP ProDesk 400 G2 Tiny Mini Desktop PC Core i5-6500T 4GB 128GB SSD W7P P6R64UT S : $399.99 USD
3) PC HP ProDesk G3 400 Core i5 (6500) 3.2GHz 4GB 128GB SSD-Windows 7/10 Pro: $349.99 GBP (About $451.14 USD)

Any opinion?

what about Silent-PC like this one?: Silent-PC Fanless Quiet Mini HTPC Desktop Computer, Intel Core i5-5250u | eBay

Thank you in advance!

I'm just starting up, I only have a camera(4MP 4431R-Z) and no other hardware yet, but I have a PC with this CPU already, that I could use, if it will work.
My plan is, to use maximum of 8 cameras. Next ones, will be the 2MP Starlight ones.
I'm also having difficulty, deciding between an NVR or PC.

I want to build a new BI machine but I wasn't sure what specs I would need. I'm thinking of getting 14 Hik cams 4mp running at 15fps. I checked ebay and there's a lot of i7 3770 8GB ram Optiplex PCs out there for <$250. Would that be enough or do I need a better processor like an i7 6700?

Get at least a 4th generation chip. If you want an i7, look at an i7-4790.

rethink the 4mp cameras...there are much better options that provide better much better low light performance...

Thanks. I've been browsing some more and as you said that's not a real starlight. About 9 of my cameras will be outdoors and 5 will be indoors. Am I correct in saying that indoor cameras aren't as important for low light and I can go cheaper with those if I'm upping my budget for Starlights like IPC-HDW4231EM-AS? If the answer is yes what would be an acceptable indoor camera?
