Main stream is for use when your on the LAN.
Sub stream is for use when you want to view away from home on your phone.
But with the camera it's self depending on what your area is like, sunny all day or overcast you will have to adjust in the camera web GUI to suit the conditions, you will learn about shutter speed, wide dynamic range, digital noise reduction.then frame rates, you might end up adjusting to much and get motion blur, just note down what you adjust and observe the effects.best way to learn is fiddle around if you mess up just restore all back to default and start again
