I have set up some alerts when there is motion. I also have some automated lights, i.e. they can go off/on while nobody is in the camera's view. This sudden light change makes the camera think there is motion and it triggers and alert. Is there a way to configure BI so it doesn't trigger an alert when there is a large light change?

You have to play around with various options and see which one will give the desired outcome, both to not trigger the camera, but also to trigger when you want it to:
Increase make time
Increase min size
Increase min contrast
Use the reset after x% option
