Appropriate uses to justify the cost of a 4K system? (Looking at home use)

Looking to put a system together for home use. I have to really sit down and plan out how many cameras I'm going to have. I wouldn't think more than 8, but I am thinking of getting a 16-ch NVR for the "just in case/expansion" factor. You know how things can roll out of control!

What are the typical uses for a 4K system, and would they apply to any scenarios in home use? I don't need a high-res parking lot shot that I can zoom into anywhere or anything like that. NVR is a good bit more money as are the cams. If I can knock 4K off my feature list, that will really help narrow down my choices.

I am looking to pick up my equipment from LTS most likely.

Thank you.

Assuming 4K will do nothing for me, I am looking at these two models playing it safe with the extra channels.

LTN8716-P8
16 channels
8 playback channels
8 POE ports

LTN8716-P16
16 channels
16 playback channels
16 POE ports

Only difference I can see is what is highlighted: playback channels and POE ports. How exactly does playback channels play into things?
There is a $120 price difference between the two.

Thanks.

Did I ask a stupid question? Is it too vague or should I clarify anything? :)

Always buy a 16ch NVR, thats a given..

For residential use, and the current prices I would favor the Darkfighter/Starlight cameras over 4k if your willing to spend the money.. most of the crime happens at night, and 4K cameras typically have shit night performance compared to HD or lesser UHD cameras.. so your more likely to get more usable data out of a 2MP DarkFighter at 2AM than a 8-12MP Camera, despite the increase in pixel density.

Personally I prefer a NVR w/No Built in POE and use an external PoE switch.. this way you can use PoE WiFi access points and other PoE devices, and also retain the ability to connect directly to your cameras for troubleshooting and configuration needs.
