I've been using ZeroTier, WireGuard before that and it seems that the number of options have grown, including TailScale and now Twingate. I think Twingate is overkill for just HA and/or BI, however if you have a remote office and need access to one or all remote office systems, this may be an option.

NetworkChuck gives a fast rundown on how it can be used, fast as in he drinks too much coffee :)

I have trust issues; "Cloud" and "VPN" don't mix in my mind :)

Selfhosted P2P wireguard for me.
True, however you can implement your own ZeroTier controller/server; also HeadScale is being developed, which is an open source implementation of TailScale.
