So, I have 3 Dahua cameras running and I'm amazed how much better the 2MP is at night.
I have 2MP, 4MP PTZ and 8MP.
The worst is the 4MP PTZ at night and the 2MP trumps them all.
I'm thinking of scrapping the 4MP PTZ and getting a 2MP PTZ of 2MPs are that much better at night? Is this normal for a 2MP to out perform others at night?

2MP = IPC-T2231T-ZAS -S3
4MP = SD49425XB-HNR
8MP = IPC-T5842T-ZE

Your 4 MP is on the same size sensor as the 2MP (1/2.8") so it needs double the light to produce the same brightness of image at night.

Your 8MP is on the same sensor designed for 4MP (1/1.8") so the 5442 beats the 5842 at night.

Quit chasing MP and chase sensor size and your night quality improves.

The field is very dark. In the distance you can see light from a street light plus the neighbor's IR floods on his house. The backyard is very dark almost to the point of tripping over yourself.

Sideyard 4MP PTZ (SD49425XB-HNR) 1/2.8"
Backyard 2MP Cam (HDW5231R-ZE) 1/2.8" similar to your 2MP cam

8W IR floodlight pointed out in field + PTZ's IR LEDs
10W IR floodlight in backyard + Cams IR LEDs

My experience of the 5842 vs. 2231 is opposite of yours. My 5842 is pretty good with low light, 5442 is the best. I'm assuming the context is IR illumination. With a bit of ambient white light the 4k/x/t stomps them all. I use external IR illumination which could skew the 2231 vs. 5842 comparison.

I wish these camara companies would let me search by sensor size. It would save me a lot of time.
AGREED!!!

It would also be helpful if they would give us some idea of how "good" the sensor technology is ... or at least a date ... since a 2023 1/1.8" sensor should be able to outperform one from 5 years earlier.

Obligatory comment that I would love Dahua to come out with a "light-sucker" (vari-focal 2MP, F1.0, and 1/1.2" (good) sensor) which would be a killer product IMHO!

Is he a frequent visitor? lol. Can I ask, what IR floods are you using and how are the powered? That one in the backyard seems to do very well especially since you describe the extreme darkness back there
Thanks.
