2431 vs 2831. First budget general purpose cam. Also any layout tips.

2431 is about $110 CAD
2831 is about $150 CAD

Not much difference in price but 4K for 40 bucks more. Before I get really job-specific cams with exact or variable focal lengths, I just want to get something cheap (cheaper than a 5448 which is $210) to replace my existing crappy Wyze cam. Something I can play around with in different locations if under corner eaves location of existing wyze cam doesn't work (its very high up but it does get a huge view with a wide angle)

Which would be the better pick and how would you say they compare?

I have attached some pictures from existing cheapo Wyze v2 cam (will be returned). It is mounted under eaves.

Oh and yes I will be installing LED floodlights on the corner for good lighting. 3500 lumens that runs at 50% until motion. Might even installed 2 on the corner for better coverage.

So without links to the exact cams you are talking about, I guess you are comparing the T2831T-ZS to the T2431TM-AS-S2?

T2831T-ZS: Varifocal (2.7-13.5mm), 8MP 1/2.7" sensor. Min Illumination rated by Dahua as 0.008 Lux @F1.5, no audio, max Kbps 8192

T2431TM-AS-S2: Fixed lens (2.8 and 3.6mm), 4MP 1/3" sensor. Min Illumination rated by Dahua as 0.008 Lux @ F1.6, has audio, max Kbps 6144

So you have to decide what is important to you. The 2831 has 8MP on a slightly larger sensor that the 2431 but has twice the number of pixels. They seem to have compensated by increasing the FStop to 1.5 vs the 1.6 on the 4MP cam. I do not trust the Min Illumination numbers for comparison.

We always say do not chase MP. I have no 8MP cams. See no reason for them. They take twice as much storage as a 4MP cam, twice the bandwidth and processing. I do not think anyone has done a comparison between these two.

The nice thing about the 2831 is it is a varifocal cam. The 2431 comes in 2.8 and 3.6mm so you would have to guess as to which to get. Both are fairly wide FOV.

@samplenhold actually I was talking about fixed focal length 2831. The variable is basically the price of a 5448 which I would rather spend my money on.

As for storage, not really a concern since I'm stopping at 4 cams max and I already have 2x 3TB WD Reds for BI.

Good point a out processing. I guess it would chew up a good chunk of MP/s. 8MP x 15 FPS = 120MP/s and my 4 core i3 8100 can probably only handled like 500ish tops? On the other hand a 4MP at 30FPS also gives 120MP/s so either way my system should be able to do 4 cams.

15FPS seems rather slow though so I think you are right 8MP is kind of useless.
 
I think you mean 5442, right? Not heard of a 5448.

Very few folks run security cams at 30FPS, most of us are at 15FPS. That is plenty for security work. You are not making a Hollywood movie.

I actually have two of the 2431's that I use in my garage. They are the 2.8mm. The last one I bought is the T2431TM-AS-S2 and I did a quick comparison to the 5442 2.8mm in a thread, see post #2:

Well here we go. I dont see anywhere more approriate to discuss this. Ive been messing around with putting together a cctv system for close to 3 years now. Ive bought everything i needed and also bought 2 cheap cams from a third party seller on walmart. Those cams cost me a grand total of $50...

Holywood hahaha good point. Actually it would have to be 24FPS for cinematic feel right xD

Yes I meant 5442 oops.

Thoughts on 2.8mm vs 3.6mm? I'm leaning towards 3.6mm for first cam since 2.8 seems excessively wide and fisheyed on my wyze cam.
 
pay close attention to sensor size. Sensor size is way more important than MP. The lens is based upon camera placement. 2.8mm for the front yard, 6mm for down side of the house, 3.6 is a good compromise for the garage/ driveway.

7) More megapixel is not necessarily better.

Sensor size is about 23% bigger on the 2831 over 2431 but 100% more pixels too hmm

1/3 vs 1/2.7 sensors
