1/1.2" sensor cameras: Is there a list? (looking for a zoom/varifocal)

ipcamtalk community, thank you for the wealth of information. I've invested extensively in reading and searching existing information.

Even after a few months, I've yet to find clear guidance on how to shop for hardware targeting a particular sensor size. Naturally, many retailers make it difficult to select this as a filter, have inaccurate databases, or lack products from some manufacturers.

I'm targeting 1/1.2" sensors, and having trouble locating zoom / varifocal cameras. I don't need PTZ in this application - just zoom.

Any pointers? Also, are there any resources I've yet to find that focus on comparing the different 1/1.2" cameras, zoom or not? E.g., Annke NC800 vs EmpireTech IPC-Color4K-X. Thanks for your time!

You can search on Hikvison or Dahuas web sites by sensor size.
Interesting, I've been on the Hikvision site quite frequently — but did not notice a sensor size filter. [EDIT: a different page has one, but does not have 1/1.2" as one of the options, even though there exist several models in the product line!!] Product Selector

I'm less familiar with the Dahua line (in that I haven’t manually looked at every datasheet yet), but here there is no sensor size filter at all: Product Selector

In any case, I've looked through Hikvision’s entire lineup manually. The 6mm version of the DS-2CD2087G2-LU could be a compromise (has the 1/1.2), but it seems out of stock everywhere. I would prefer more telephoto range though, as well as the ability to adjust. It doesn't look like Hikvision makes a 1/1.2 with zoom lens (short of the extremely high-end >$1k / camera range). I'm happy to spend $500+ as needed, but probably not $1k+.

It would be helpful to know if any such camera even exists. While of course a list would be great :), maybe 1/1.2 zoom is just not available?

Yes, it would be nice to have a solid place to search for various attributes .. very many retailers / brand do not even list sensor size .. so frustrating.

This is why I prefer Dahua OEM or HIkvision OEM cameras from people like Andy / Amcrest / Nelly's ( all vendors here ) who list the specs.

Where did you find this?
Looking on the hikvision product selector, they give very few filter options.

Maybe they've "updated" it since 2023 :(
So frustrating.

How do professionals installing these cameras find the camera/s they need for each install. They must have there site with the details or something, because the public facing site is terrible.

Here is a list, I am not sure what is out there today but maybe something from this list can help someone..

Axis Communications
Axis Q3538-LVE
Sensor: 1/1.2"
Lens: Varifocal 4.3–8.6 mm, P-Iris, IR-corrected
Zoom: ~2x optical (limited due to wide FOV focus)
Notes: Exceptional WDR and low light, built-in IR

Axis Q6138-LE PTZ
Sensor: 1/1.2"
Zoom: 38x optical
Lens: Built-in motorized PTZ
Notes: High-end PTZ, IR, analytics

Hikvision
Hikvision DS-2CD7A46G0-IZHSY
Sensor: 1/1.2" progressive scan CMOS
Lens: Varifocal motorized 2.8–12 mm or 8–32 mm
Zoom: Motorized varifocal (not full PTZ)
Notes: DarkFighterS series, good low light

Dahua
Dahua IPC-HF8843F
Sensor: 1/1.2" progressive scan CMOS
Lens: C/CS mount (interchangeable), not fixed zoom but supports motorized zoom lenses
Notes: Box-style camera, choose your own zoom lens (Tamron, Computar)

Dahua SD8A840-HNF
Sensor: 1/1.2" Might be 1/1.8 can't remember
Zoom: 40x optical zoom
Lens: Integrated PTZ
Notes: High-end PTZ, excellent in low light

Dahua IPC-HF7442F-Z
Sensor: 1/1.2"
Lens: Varifocal motorized zoom (4.1–16.4 mm)

Most Dahua & HIK models You gave are not 1/1.2" (mostly 1/1.8") or don't even exist (I can't find them)...

Except ColorVu / FullColor cams we know (like Color4K) / use on this from both HIK & Dahua, HIK have a few ultra models with 1/1.2" sensor which have optical zoom and supports IR (or dual IR + white):

Interesting is that HIK have PTZ with 4 Mpx sensor at 1/1.2" size (not only 8 Mpx)..

the same story is with Dahua:

As You see, 1/1.2" is only available on cheap FullColor/ColorVu (without IR) or very high priced very big & heavy dual lens or/and PTZ models from Ultra lines (with IR)..

Outside those niches 1/1.2" sensor in CCTV by both HIK & Dahua is dead.

if someone really really want 1/1.2" camera with IR & optic zoom - Axis have a few models. Of course at price points which aren't acceptable for 99.9% forum members.

1/1.8" + modern video processing (AI) is the sweet spot in the world of CCTV. Offers very good quality at acceptable price point and acceptable camera / optics size/weight.

After I wrote previous post I check OmniVision (manufacturer of 1/1.8" sensors used in WizMind-S/-X cams) and I found that OmniVision have 2 NEW sensors with new HDR DCG (Dual Conversion Gain) Technology, which do high dynamic HDR image using only ONE shot at sensor level which are then two times probed using different analog gains at sensor level (Dual-ISO from SONY pro cameras). This solves all problems which WDR created before on cams (chroma aberration around bright elements due dual/triple shots per frame, ability to use longer shutter times).

Clearly these models use the latest Omnivision sensor technologies which are designed for the mobile phone/sports camera market. And they can be Chinese response for Sony Starvis 2 sensors (which have similar technologies / features).

Those sensors are 4 and 8 Mpx with sensor size 1/1.8" (for 4Mpx) and 1/1.25" (for 8Mpx). SO both sensors have the same pixel size at 2.9um.
Sensors are new, PDF materials are dates as July 2024.

Interesting is that there is no new 8Mpx sensor at 1/1.8" size in OmniVision catalog (only the old one used in latest two generations of 5842 for last 5-6 years)..

If Dahua will stay with Omnivision for WizMind-S/X next year replacement (after typical 3 years product cycle) there is hope, that 8Mpx model will use 1/1.25" sensor and will have identical night performance that 4Mpx at 1/1.8" sensor model.. Which will be very nice..

This will require to design/produce two different sets of optics / lenses for 4 and 8Mpx models... If lens parameters (aperture size, zoom ranges) will be the same for both models, varifocal optics for 1/1.25" will be much bigger that actual one for 1/1.8"... it should fit bullet, but turret will grow much more.. Or they can go with different zoom ranges for different resolutions - like Axis did..

Or they can switch to SmartSens sensors, which have modern 4/6/8Mpx sensor models at 1/1.8" (used in HIK ColorVu 3.0 or Dahua TIOC-PRO or new WizColor 5x49-PRO cams). And they will stay with 1/1.8" for all resolutions...
