Help with layout and cam selection

I don't mind running Cat cable through my attic. Already did that for my internal hard wired network. I can use the existing coax as a feeder to "pull" the Cat out to the through points around the outside of the house. Yes, I was thinking I'd add another camera at that #5 location. I'd just pull...

Help with layout and cam selection

Now that the inside renovations on my house are finally done, I can address the replacement of the existing outdoor security cams around my house. I attached a pic showing my lot and the house, with the location and number of each existing camera (pointing angles are only approximate). These are...

Troubling experience with Ring Gen 1 alarm

I had to both unplug it and remove the battery. When I put the battery back in I was able to disarm it. The system has been installed and in use since March of 2019. Interesting. Unfortunately my router logs don’t go back far enough to see if such a thing happened at the time the base station...

Troubling experience with Ring Gen 1 alarm

Mine has been plugged in since I installed it. What you described is the way I had been using it - similarly with no issues - up until this last occurrence, where it was Armed 24/7 for over a month. It was during this utilization when it locked up and showed Offline.

@fenderman, what’s the longest continuous period of time you’ve run either of these?

Troubling experience with Ring Gen 1 alarm

I’ve had it since last year. Up until now it’s been used for at most maybe a week / 10 days at a time - the vast majority of times much less. What bothers me is there appears to be no “failsafe” reboot behavior or something like that in the base station, so that it would have a way to detect...

Troubling experience with Ring Gen 1 alarm

I was away from home for a while, so I activated my Ethernet hard-lined Ring Gen 1 alarm system (consisting of contact sensors, motion detectors, and fire/smoke sensors). While away I’d check it every so often to make sure all was good. About a month after I left I checked a Ring pop up to...

Stumped getting ready to install Ring Retrofit device

Well, that was relatively easy. I have one Zone not working but I think that’s because I may have mislabeled the Common for that zone. That circuit doesn’t open up when a contact is opened. I’ll hunt it down tomorrow. I even got the motion sensors working by letting the old Magnum system supply...

Stumped getting ready to install Ring Retrofit device

My new (to me) house has an old Magnum Alert 1000e hardwired installation. Since Ring recently came out with this Retrofit device, and my Magnum system is set up with a number of zones that will work with the Retro, I decided to get it. Should have it tomorrow. In the meantime I’ve set up a...

Need help figuring out how to playback captures on old DVR

I moved into a house that has an old security cam setup - 8 analog cameras, and a DVR hidden away in the house. I had to dig up an old VGA monitor to attach to the DVR so I could take a look at what was still working. I am attaching front and back view of the DVR, and one of the remote, in case...

Keep existing BNC cameras/cabling and install additional IP cameras with everything running off of Blue Iris?

This is about as timely as it gets. I just bought a house that is outfitted with an LTS LTD 2408 DVR and a full assortment of fixed and PTZ coax cams. I was not looking forward to crawling through the attic to replace the coax with Ethernet, but at the same time I wasn’t sure if the LTD 2408 was...

    New Ring Alarm System 199

The keypad is at the top of the stairs just inside my bedroom and the repeater is at the bottom of the stairs. Standard length staircase. It'd been working fine since the day of installation up until about three days ago.

    New Ring Alarm System 199

In the last few days my keypad has been dropping Offline at least once a day. Going to Keypad->Settings->Advanced->Reconfiguration to get it to come back Online works, but it will then drop off within a day. I wonder if it's failing? Nothing else hooked up wirelessly is dropping off.

    New Ring Alarm System 199

Hi @NVR, sorry to drag to up after so long, but are you still being covered? How did you determine that you were still under coverage with 4G?

    New Ring Alarm System 199

It's just the central indicator, but I'll have to see if that is also part of the detection behavior.

    New Ring Alarm System 199

Motion detector in a bedroom? I have the Ring motion detector set up on my first floor in a spot that provides good coverage. I'd like to put a second one upstairs, but all the rooms upstairs are bedrooms. I notice the motion detector flashes when something enters its field of view, so I was...

    New Ring Alarm System 199

Never mind. I figured that out. Is there a way to change the brightness on the keypad? Didn't see anything about that in the manual or in the app, so I'm guessing the answer is no.

    New Ring Alarm System 199

Thanks @fenderman. One other thing - do the sensors tie only to the base station, or do they also to the keypad? I'm trying to figure out the best place for the range extender. If the sensors close to the keypad can use the keypad as the linkage point, then that would change where I put the...

    New Ring Alarm System 199

So I finally got mine set up last night. Easy peasy. No problems, but there were a couple of things I couldn't quite figure out. First, it's not clear how I might disable the alarm from my phone app when I get home. Second, I can't see if there's a way to disable certain sensors or zones when I...

For anyone who is a Costco member, Costco is having a sale on their 10 piece Ring Security system kit. $200.

    New Ring Alarm System 199

So if this is OT for this thread, somebody please point me in the right (thread, if it already exists) direction - what is the optimal arrangement of motion detectors vs. point of entry sensors?

    New Ring Alarm System 199

Thanks for the help, everyone. I purchased the Costco 10 piece kit. Good member price ($240). I calculated what the extra cost would be to get to the same 14 piece kit as shown on sale directly from Ring, and it comes out still to be a bit less through Costco. I figured too that Costco would be...

    New Ring Alarm System 199

Okay. I knew about the cellular monitoring, but is the cellular path on "all the time" or does it get engaged if and when the network path dies? If the latter, then what is the transfer time? What I'm trying to understand is whether there is a potential "dead window" time that could be used by...

    New Ring Alarm System 199

Good points for me to consider, Camit. OTOH with the Costco choice I could return it at (pretty much) any time in the future if for some reason I decide the Ring system is not to my liking.

    New Ring Alarm System 199

Ring seems to have a pretty good price on a 14 piece kit (8 sensors, two keypads, 2 motion sensors). But my question is whether a second keypad really gets you anything. Or even a second motion detector. I could otherwise spend a bit less at Costco and get a kit with one keypad and one motion...
