    Pandemic threat? Anyone else concerned?

I was chatting with my girl about the panic buying here... primarily toilet paper... and remarked that it's quite inappropriate for stores to take returns on these hoardings. If you think you needed it, keep it for next time the flu goes around.

You guys are probably doing it better... thicker ply or something.

    Review-OEM 4mp AI Cam IPC-T5442TM-AS Starlight+

Butyl tape should be available at local caravan/motorhome parts suppliers. I bought some sheets of closed-cell EVA foam and template items I want to seal onto it, and then cut it out to form a gasket. It is good practice to create a drainage slot on the bottom edge and align the baseplate notch...

    Review-OEM 4mp AI Cam IPC-T5442TM-AS Starlight+

I drilled a 25mm hole through the masonry, and can push the sealed CAT housing and power cable into it. Because the wall is rendered and painted it isn't a big problem if patching is required later. The low profile installation is less imposing. Cheers, Steve

    VPN Primer for Noobs

IMO, using just the one router would be a better option.

    Dahua's Main Competitor Is... Dahua!

Catchy title fishing for some chitchat comparing some of the latest low-light offerings against old favourites. Some of these cams seem really close to one another in specs, and I wonder how much is being missed in such a simplistic comparison of numbers and feature check-boxes. So how about...

Are camera's useful anymore for theft?

I've been considering a perimeter monitor, and from your report these sound suitable. How do they go as far as false alerts? Do they really require a heat-source to trigger? Cheers, Steve

    VPN Primer for Noobs

Yes, I use the Asus' OpenVPN with No-IP (free) and "OpenVPN for Android"... the latter being the Arne Schwabe build, not the official app. It works seamlessly, and has numerous other uses once you can dial-in to your home network. In understanding the security side, firstly it's important to...

    VPN Primer for Noobs

No VLAN. Was planning to, set up without, tested, thought about it, but really don't think it necessary. Some others will surely disagree. I've run some scanners and network monitors, and can't see any connections that slightly interest me. Yes, I get email notifications, however they're from...

    VPN Primer for Noobs

Perhaps look at setting up a VLAN on the Asus for the cams... it's a similar arrangement to having the second router, which you sound quite set on. I just use the one network and ensure that all security settings are maximised. My cams have no outbound internet access. Apologies I missed you...

    Hard Drive Failure Notification

I don't think it would be best practice to recover any damaged RAID array which was still in use. Doubling the writes is only an issue if the controller can't handle it and we have not been advised of the subject system scale. With disks so cheap a simple mirror might have satisfied the OPs...

Confused Noob - Basic PC NVR Setup

You might choose to put a micro SD card in the camera, given you only have the one. Otherwise you will have to have a PC/Mac or NVR running all the time. Cheers, Steve

    VPN Primer for Noobs

The Asus option makes it nice and easy to implement the VPN, and you're possibly going to gain improvements in WiFi performance as a bonus. That said flashing your existing router with an open source firmware will probably do the job just fine. I used Gargoyle on a Netgear and it was possibly...

    Dahua NVR Issues

You're using P2P for off-site access? If so, is your internet provider perhaps restricting the connection? Using a VPN connection is a far better solution. Cheers, Steve

Dahuas lose custom bitrate upon reboot. Any work around?

It wasn't being suggested that the NVR was responsible for the reboots [emoji849]
