    I've used software like Nagios to monitor when parts of a network are down. You can set it up to send you an email once something is down for a certain amount of time. You can set it to tell when anything with an IP address is down. Nagios is free.

    Just remove the gateway IP from your BI PC and your cameras. Will still be accessible on the LAN but not the WAN.

    I'm just a newb and am still learning, but I would change the small purple drives to 1 large. It'll be cheaper upfront and for power consumption. How many days are you planning on keeping your recordings?

    I have been reading for days on this site and haven't been able to find much information on good cameras for apparently abnormal circumstances, where there is plenty of light. I understand that if i want good night vision I will purchase some of the 2MP Dahua cameras with the Starlight sensors...
