    Hardware help.

If this is truly an "emergency" as you allude to: you need something now, then I can stop you right now from worrying about the length of the cat 5 runs, because none of that is something you get from amazon and 20 min later you're up and running. The closest solution for you is, as frankred...

Advice/Assistance on placement of cameras for floor plan

It's got the same IP66 rating, so resistant to direct water; fully rain proof and rated down below sub-freezing temperatures.

Can someone tell me the difference between these cams.....

    http://www.dahuasecurity.com/products/ipc-hfw4300s-398.html http://www.dahuasecurity.com/products/ipc-hfw2300r-zvf-1019.html IPC-HFW4300S = 3.6mm fixed lens (6mm,8mm optional) IPC-HFW2300R-Z/VF = 2.7~12mm varifocal lens The 2300 doesn't seem to be a fixed lens camera, so it has optical zoom...

Advice/Assistance on placement of cameras for floor plan

Can't speak to that dome cam--but why not go with the hikvision turret? Thing looks great, suffers no IR issues that a dome might, and its eye is fully moveable so you can mount on a wall or under an overhang.

Rough estimate of daily storage requirement for 24-hours

Yeah I don't think it's possible in windows to tell an external drive not to sleep (I know you can internal), though I imagine you could install a service--actually I'm sure you could--that would just write and delete bits to it to keep it alive, if there is no way within the OS to set that up...

Rough estimate of daily storage requirement for 24-hours

Perhaps I've been lucky with my external drives ;) I have two old 200 GB USB drives, each dedicated to a hikvision camera and each have been running flawlessly for nine months. They're just plugged in with USB cables and packing taped to the top of my PC! Recording constantly, neither one has...

Mounting the 2332 on cedar shingle

Not only can you adjust for 10 degrees, but you can for 90. I have one of those cams on an overhang parallel with the ground and another mounted on a wall perpendicular to it.

Very Disappointed - Lack Of Support

I can't help and I do wish you the best of luck, but I don't think the state attorney general needs to hear about this.

Rough estimate of daily storage requirement for 24-hours

Just checked one of my hikvision 3MP, it's at full resolution and 15 FPS with variable bitrate and "medium" quality, it's going back 4 days and 8 hours on a 200 GB drive. Another cam same exact config and same size drive is going back 5 days and 6 hours. So at these settings it's 40-50 GB/day...

    RJ45 corroding connection

I moved one of my cams well after running some network cable. The cable was too short by a large amount, so I have it joined up with a cheap two-female RJ45 connector. It's under an eave, so never, ever gets direct rain. This has worked fine for several months, but recently the camera stopped...

Trying to decide between 2.8mm and 4mm 2332

It will cause you physical agony to set a 3 MP cam at 2MP because you'll be up at night knowing you lost resolution. What is said above is absolutely true about the FOV, but these are 3 MP cams. You gotta go with the 3 MP :) My porch I've got on a 2.8 and it gets my front door and a 90 degree...

I you have a choice, which firmware for a 2332?

I don't think it has any intelligent recognition built into the camera itself; just pixels and also I think there is some line detection, though I don't use it and I've heard it may have actually been better (line detection) in previous firmware revisions. Whoever manages hikvision's firmware is...

Are there really NO stupid questions?

There are some stupid questions but yours aren't :) i have read read good things about smartthjngs but I can also recommend to not expect too much out of any of these inexpensive home automation systems--and even the expensive ones are a lot of fiddle. wire up whichever cameras you can, but...

I you have a choice, which firmware for a 2332?

I've only used 5.1.5 and 5.2.0. The latter added a ton more functionality, specifically a bunch of test buttons. Also it was able to FTP properly (former version couldn't). I've had no desire to add a subsequent version.

    recommendation for an outdoor cam

They are very similar. Outside of any possible IR reflection issues the dome should function similarly; same sensor and what not.

That's why I have three of them :) They really are awesome.

    recommendation for an outdoor cam

I'd stick with the 3MP for now, as they are quite a lot cheaper than the 4 MP.

    Always on windows device

I don't think heat output from a PC is inefficient; it is waste heat. Electric heating by its definition is by making electricity move inefficiently through wires to produce heat. After whatever energy is used to make work (sound, light), pretty much all watts that get to a PC end up as heat...

    Always on windows device

I didn't check your math but I've done my own before. I'm currently running a desktop machine 24/7 because I know it would take a long time for a NUC to pay for itself. Moreover, I use that particular desktop often myself and waiting even 30 seconds for it to boot up is absolutely unacceptable...

If I'm using something like Sighthound, would I still need an SD card in the camera?

Re: If I'm using something like Sighthound, would I still need an SD card in the came I would just use it as a backup anyway since SD cards are super cheap.

Before I run my wires - How to find best location for camera

According to this utterly ridiculous article, way over the top, it's 64 degrees. So the 2.8 would be almost 1.5 X wider, and the 4mm only a tiny bit wider: http://www.wired.com/2015/05/measuring-field-view-iphone-6-camera/ Height calculations won't scale the same way because of the resolution...

Before I run my wires - How to find best location for camera

I think that's around 70 degrees, maybe a smidge higher. When I was trying to figure out which cams to get (2.8 is about 90 degrees) I stood in various spots where they were and held my arms at 90 or 70 degree angles so I could get a rough estimation of what it would be able to see. Actually, I...

What style drywall anchors are best?

Something like a camera any drywall screw should be fine. I recently had to mount shelves directly into drywall and bought from lowes these utterly ridiculous big things. They are metal like the picture above with the T, but they have plastic "strings" that, once the bolt is put through the now...

Solving some NFS issues on Hikvision cameras

I haven't had this problem and I specifically tested for its occurrence. If my main PC, which is housing CIFS/SMB 200 GB shares, one dedicated per camera, reboots then the camera will send me an email saying that it has lots its HD, but as soon as the PC comes back up it is able to jump right...

    Outdoor PZT

OP, it may be worth considering no PTZ at all and just two static cams. A 3 MP cam unzoomed is going to look fairly similar to a 1.3 MP camera zoomed a few times, and you can get one with a 90 degree viewing angle, have their fields of view juxtaposed and now you have 180 degrees viewing angle...

Tell us about your home automation!

As somebody on reddit said, they paid a bargain price for their wink hub and are having a bargain experience. I'm using it only for turning some lights on and off at sunset/sunrise. For that it works most of the time. Notice I didn't say all, but enough of the time that it's satisfactory. I...

    Amazon: buyer beware

Amazon definitely doesn't release your CC info to anybody. If you don't want to take any chances, buy from milkisbad here, who works for LTS Inc. They are US region Hikvision, though re-branded, but that won't matter at all.

    Chilling home invasion

I'm just truly surprised it took this long and also that the other two haven't been arrested yet. They will be. In the very near future image recognition of videos like this will immediately match virtually everybody to a database with a picture and name. It's still scary how stupid some people...

Hikvision outdoor + solar panels at 7.5m :D

Pretty good job! That is the worst :( Ground around my house is like cement after the first two feet. It literally has to be chipped/scraped away with a pick-axe or something else to crumble it. Shoveling is utterly impossible by hand.[/COLOR]
