Firm up choices for Cam Location...detailed pics included!

I think I would start with a 4mm for the driveway. 2.8 mm will probably cost too much detail and let you see stuff you really don't care much about. True, you won't get the entirety of the driveway (you don't have it in the sample pic, either), but you can get what you need. I have a 4mm on my...

    Why turrets instead of bullets?

I think turrets simply look better than bullets, so all mine are turrets :) They look cooler than domes, too, and no need to worry about possible IR reflection issues like with a dome.

NVR or Computer in Gun Safe

Too much heat imo. Either use a NAS or one of the small Intel Nec PCs and simply hide it somewhere in the house. No thief is chasing network runs around trying to figure out where your PC is. My cams write images only (pic for video) real time as a back up to a hard drive attached to a router...

    Christmas Eve Accident

As post after yours alludes to, there is no good answer. I have a PC used for storage on a UPS and I guess it would go for 5-10 minutes. It's mainly just to let it gracefully boot down if power is out and also handle the occasional cut off we get that last a second or two. My cameras are on a...

Best body cam for around $150-$200?

Police grade bodycams are very expensive. Depending on what you are going for you could use a dash cam app on your smartphone. I've been using one in my car for over two years.

    Garbage can

Are you able to draw power near the can or will you need to zoom in 600 feet (I assume so)? Can you put a trail cam near it? That, if you can, would be the cheapest and easiest thing to do to be honest.

Need replacement for Logitech Alert camera

Do covert cameras have a place in Home security?

They don't need to have access to it. I've idly thought about setting up a hidden camera in my main living space that just loops onto an SD card. As mentioned in the post above yours its purpose would be to catch behavior of somebody who breaks in and I want to have nice video of them inside...

is this cheap no-brand poe switch interesting?

That switch looks good to me! "Never burned device" is reassuring and "Suit for almost all kinds of poe camera" tells you all you need to know.:) For something like this I'd stick to a name brand switch on amazon. This is a single point of failure for the entire system and not a place worth...

Do we really need 4MP? Dahua resolutions comparison.

Difference certainly seems small and I've no desire at all to upgrade from 3MP yet.

Food for thought. Huisun vs Hikvision

Can't believe hikvision still doesn't work with Chrome. Pathetic. I've been forced to use IE now for months to login to my cams on a browser. Otherwise I still love my cams, though. Super reliable, have had no issues with three of the mounted outside now for over a year.

Cam Location Pic (2.8mm or 4mm)?

4mm. The 2.8 will give you 90 degrees, which means full yard, but you'll significantly compromise door detail. Or just buy two 4mm and then you're really cooking ;)

I understand psychology quite well and have a good mind for statistics, so my post plays the odds, and good ones they are, too.

    Capture of shooting.

It's too late for that. What he may have deserved was a decent life back in the day, but unfortunately has been replaced by a ward of the state who almost took the life of a decent contributor to society and probably didn't care much then, nor now. He'll shrug it off and continue to repress what...

    Capture of shooting.

The purpose of these laws are not to encourage you to step into a violent altercation potentially to save someone. They are to encourage you to drag somebody from a burning vehicle and protect you if the person is so ungrateful that despite saving their life they sue you for injuring their...

    Capture of shooting.

I agree. Basically best course of action was to tell the guy that you've already called the cops and keep a big distance, hoping you can outrun him if you're not in a car. Or alternatively if you are armed you can do something (however, most aren't). I'm not really clear on what the law would...

    Capture of shooting.

VERY lucky. So lucky. I really admire this guy because most people will do absolutely nothing in a scenario like that, it really takes a lot of guts, but so many people who interject in scenarios like this end up beaten or dead for the effort. The courage is rarely rewarded.

    Mail theft

Simply, as mentioned late in this thread, it is patently and undeniably illegal for an advertiser to access your mailbox. In fact, I think it is strictly speaking illegal for them to even attach something to the outside of the mailbox (though prosecution of that is highly unlikely even if it is...

    Facial recognition and camera lighting

$30 for a standard house light that, on movement, blasts out 2 X 100 W halogens. Just be sure to test the response time of your camera; either leave it on day at all times or be sure that when it is set to night and the extra light comes on it isn't blinded for long.

    Mini movie. Get your popcorn!

Honestly, if somebody enters you house and they leave alive you have been merciful. That is a whole other level beyond breaking into a car.

Car Door Checker-This Is Getting Old Folks

Motion detection lights are also a good way to stop this sort of silliness. You'll need to test to make sure that the jolt of bright light doesn't flood out the camera and make everything look terrible for a few seconds, though; i.e. you may find that the camera does best kept in day mode, and...

Car Door Checker-This Is Getting Old Folks

Uh oh! You are flirting with danger on this; sounds like you are trying to record only on motion. What happened is that the pre-record didn't kick in because it probably didn't properly detect motion until after a legitimate motion had occurred. You should be recording 24/7 with any video...

Car Door Checker-This Is Getting Old Folks

Did you let the police know? Maybe get prints? Honestly, if this happened in my neighborhood and I didn't know who did it I would print the picture over-sized at Staples. I would then place it on a poster board in my front yard staked, asking people if they know who this guy is. Would scare the...

The police want a copy of Dahua hard drive to investigate B&E

hehe, I guess it depends what they mean by retrieve, but it sure sounds mystical ;) I agree with him about the quality of some people's systems, though. I would hazard to guess most people on this forum have cameras with better definition than the bulk of commercial installs.

    Why Hikvision?

Because with Hikvision, for under $400, I got three IP66 rated 3 MP cameras. Approaching the one year mark on the install of these now. To the best of my recollection I've had the following two issues over this 10-11 month period: 1) One camera's "hard drive" (it records to a drive on a PC) got...

Thoughts after upgrading from 3MP turret to 4MP dome

After reviewing some pics in the long Hikvision 4 MP thread I soon realized I had no yearning for them at all. If buying new and the price is okay, sure--they are better--but spending time/money on upgrading from the 3 to 4 isn't compelling to me. As you said, the differences are not...

    Hello Everyone

Too many people have been burned recording only on motion such that I feel comfortable predicting most here would agree the better course is to record 24/7. I am sure that is how most of us do it. You can still have motion events, but the risk of an event not successfully triggering and missing...
