The logs on the NVR side should be good enough to at least point you in the right direction. And if not there may be an option on the NVR to use SSH which will let you see even more details in the logs.- looktall

VLAN isolation still permitting net traffic
I'm not sure what setting up a vpn has to do with preventing your vlan hitting the internet. Perhaps if you tell us what model router you're using we can confirm the settings etc.- looktall

How Do I configure Nikvision NVR to add several remote cameras using a POE switch?
How many cameras in total are you trying to add? That NVR can only accept up to 16 cameras regardless of how you connect them.- looktall

Is the camera at default settings for everything? Have you made any changes at all yet? What are the settings? I would first look at testing this in another location and seeing if the issue resolves itself in which case it is something in the field of view and the settings that are not working... -

For the price of it, it's actually a really good camera. I wouldn't worry so much about the sensor size though because unlike the others you mention, this a 6mp camera (2 x 3mp), so those sensors (which are actually 1/2.5 according to the specs) are just fine for 3mp. I have one in my backyard...
