I currently run blue iris along with its mobile app and it works fine. I have a friend who likes my system and wants help upgrading his business's cameras. He isnt as tech savvy or willing to tinker so will likely be going with an empire tech/dahua NVR. I'll be helping him set it up but am not as familiar with their NVR's and DMSS.

Am I able to use the DMSS app along with blue iris on my phone to familiarize myself with the app or will that conflict with Blue Iris?

Don't know, not a BI user.

If you can connect to and add the cameras independent of BI it might work. The cameras would either have to have P2P enabled or VPN into the network first. Then you would add them via P2P (manual using serial numbers) or by IP depending on which way you go

You do not need and NVR and you can use each camera independently in DMSS, but it will not connect to BI.
I’m not using it with BI. I just wanted to connect my cameras to DMSS in conjunction with my bi system to familiarize my self with the app before I help a friend set their system up that will not be going the BI route

Yep you can do that, but I would suggest just doing one camera. It gets messy quick once you try to do more than a few cameras without an NVR.

Also depending on your network topology you may have to make other changes.
