Any experiences with the NVR4216-4K

So these have came down to a cost that is tempting me to finally go for it ($250 shipped).. Im adding and upgrading some cameras and looking to double my recording space, but my current FTP NVR only has 1 eSata port and I am not horribly keen on an external sata enclosure w/an expander (they are not cheap).. I cant shove any more disks into my NAS so its off the table also.

I guess my main concerns are:

1. Is the new 4K WebUI any better than the previous NVR2416? I read many complaints that it was slow and clunky compared to the camera's WebUI.. Anyone know if it works with OSX/Sarafi?
2. SmartPSS, ive never hooked a dahua NVR up to it.. The software runs great on OSX, but it wont play back video stored on my cameras.. Can I use it play back recordings off the NVR if the WebUI is still painful to use?

Hey nayr,
I run smartPSS on a bunch of different Dahua and rebranded Dahua's Tribrids and nvr's. I like it A LOT better than the embeded software on the dvr. I have it on two of dahua 4k nvrs and its really smooth on my windows computers. I like it because you can connect multiple dvr's and nvr's easily across different subnets. Playback is very good with no issues. If you have a older dual cores Its not going to be pretty. Any newer pc will handle it with no problems. I have ran it on a host of different workstations with little issues. I have only found one bug, it seems to drop a stream now and then for some reason. I use it on a few dedicated viewing stations. So all in all I would give it thumbs up. In the 4k nvr's i have had no issues either but I usually do not use the nvr web based stuff for other than setup. I can't answer the other questions but I checked dahua website and they have some support and plug in for mac stuff. Hope this helps a little for you.

Cheers thanks, yeah im using SmartPSS right now on a dedicated monitor with 5 streams on my overlocked i7 and it handles it with ease so thats not a concern, it runs absolutely great on OSX and I really like the gDMSS Mobile apps.. I hear the push stuff works pretty well so I am keen on trying that into my home automation system and not only getting notified my mailbox was opened but a lil video clip of it happening.

I guess i have not played with SmartPSS enough yet, I just forced a camera to record to local storage and what do you know.. I can search and play it back in SmartPSS, I should figured.. but until now I had nothing to really playback through SmartPSS so i was not quite sure how well it worked.

All the other dahua crap works fine on OSX, I was just a little worried when I did some research and found out that the NVR's UI was not the same as the IPC's UI... I doubt it'll be an issue.

contrary to what they model indicates, these NVRs don't truly support 4K cameras. I hooked up just one 4K camera and the picture was choppy, slow, only if you set 10fps it starts to run good. It's very reliable for 4MP cameras though. The UI is the same as the previous models. If you'll hook up 4k cameras, you should go for 5XXX-4K models.

What 4k camera did you hookup? Was it choppy and slow on recording or just the live view the 4k stream? I could see it struggling to actually display a 4k video without better gfx hardware.. all the dahua 4k cameras ive been spying top out at 15fps right now, I suspect if I find a need for the extra pixels 10fps will be fine, many of my cameras are only doing 10fps anyhow.. you dont get much more out of anything higher other than more required disk space.. I record 24/7 if that helps, the NVR dont really have to do much work but save the stream to file.. it wont even be hooked to a display.

How is the h265 support? I was more attracted to this model with the new codec and a 12MP limit I am unlikely to hit anytime soon.. I suspect when I make the leap to 4k the first thing to be replaced will be my 12x 2MP Black Face Dahua and im going to be waiting a while before I could ever afford that proposition... I am planing on getting a pretty good life out of it to get my money's worth

I just hooked up a 4416. Only thing I can compare it to is a 7416-non4k.

4416-4k NVR GUI is a bit slower than the 7416. I have 8 cameras running 15-10fps. Some at 2mp and others at 3mp. all seem good for now what little I've been able to play with them. . I actually have both NVR running, recording the same except the 2-3mp camerassince the 7416 won't show live view above 2mp.

Still waiting on 2-4mp cameras to be delivered then ill be up to 10.

I would get dropped frames on the 7416 once in awhile. haven't noticed any yet on the 4416.

If storage is your issue consider the 4416. 6tb per drive capable. I get alot of motion alerts from trees, birds, wind, shadows, headlights, with my current setup 4tb runs 3months before writing to the next drive.

Note, if your running a long hdmi cable from NVR to a TV. Sometimes mine drop out, if turning TV on/off doesn't reset it I have to reboot the NVR. The NVR is about 20 Ft away in a secure location.

thanks guys I think you sold me, luckily to get it to display on my TV is easy with my AV in the same rack as the NVR so I dont have to worry about weak HDMI output, or noise level.

I have 5 dahua ipc's and I am upping it to 7, for now, all record @ 15fps

• 4 record 24/7 @ 2x 2MP, 3MP, 4MP
• 1 all night long (12/7) @ 3MP

and adding

• 1 ALPR Line Cross Motion @ 4MP (MJPEG)
• 1 Indoor Pet Door Motion @ 2MP

with my 5 right now I get ~12 days on my 4TB Purple, I want 3 weeks minimum and LPR wont be kept any longer than it takes a lil raspberry to process them via API.

a 6TB purple in the mix would be more than enough and give me room for a few more cameras in high security places.

I hooked a 12MP fisheye camera (was set to 8MP) and the performance was very poor, basically choppy, slow, sometimes freezing for 4-5 seconds, even on 10 fps. worked good on "7fps" (and 2Mbit/s!). I talked with my supplier, and it turned out that te series 4XXX-4K does not truly support 8 MP (as the model suggests), Dahua decided to promote it like that just to be one step ahead of Hikvision. If you hook up 8 cams (8MP) it's not gonna work. I think the processor cannot handle that data, or the bandwidth is limited.

No h265 supported, actually I think that is offered by the camera. The camera I used was only h264. Another one was h265 and it showed up on the NVR as h265 compression.

p.s. the 4xxx-4k works fine with the 4MP cameras though. I would recommend it (given the price compared to 4416).

Are you referring to the NVR5XXX-4KS2 models ?

When comparing the NVR5216-4KS2 model to a NVR4216-4K model two features seems a bit odd for the NVR5216-4KS2 model :



Display : 1080p ?
Recording : h264 only ?

Both seem to be errors as the feature page for the NVR5216-4KS2 model again states HDMI (up to 3840x2160) and h265 ..
I assume therefore that the feature page shows the actual specs.

Just to crosscheck:
The feature page for the NVR5216-4KS2 model also states : max 16ch@1080p h. 265/h. 264 decoding.

- Is this related to the effective 'grid' resolution of each channel when using live streaming ?
So it does allow each channel to be connected to a 4k camera and to actually record in 4K @ 12Mbps?

- If using less than 16 channels, does the resolution capability increase at some point to 4k per channel ?

The NVR4216-4K model states : Up to 8ch@1080P(4ch@H.265+4ch@H.264) realtime live-view.

So can I conclude that the NVR5216-4KS2 :
- is twice as powerful when compared to the NVR4216-4K model with respect to live streaming the grid view
- is nearly identical with respect to storage performance : 320Mbps versus 256Mbps bandwidth, but both allow 12Mbps per channel ?

its the bandwidth, the NVR52XX-4KS2 can handle 320Mbps of h264.. the 42XX-4k can handle 200Mbps... one has a quad core, the other has a dual core.

the 52xx is going to have better hardware decoding to handle high bitrate from 4k..

I am curious @karmadhi, was that 4k camera a h265 or h265 feed? h265 should alleviate some of the issues, presuming its decoding capabilities are equal.

so far I am very happy with my 4216-4k, but Ive got nothing greater than 4MP plugged into it.. the price of 4k is just a bit out reason for most residential uses still.. hope it comes down in a few more years.

Can you perhaps confirm that when using less than 8 channels, the 4216-4k allows for live viewing of 4mp instead of 1080p resolution per channel ?
Sounds logical, but I'm new to NVRs and am considering ordering either the 4216-4k or the NVR5216-4KS2 so just want to confirm this.

I am getting full resolution feeds out of it on SmartPSS, but the display I have it on (my main TV) is merely a 1080p.. it does have settings for HDMI display resolutions greater than 1080p, up to 4k iirc.. its getting feeds at 2MP/3MP/4MP and recording, displaying, streaming, and playing back just fine.. plus the D1 substreams @ 2Mbps each, but those are not saved.. they probably count in the bandwidth totals tho.

6 are hooked up right now, 7th will be on its way.. when I was recording to 5 to FTP 24/7 it was well under 100Mbit, so I should have alot of overhead avilable with that 200Mbit celing.

for me to go 4k TV I have to remodel my fireplace first, so its going to be a hell of an upgrade for the house

Remove AUTO and set TCP - or whatever else you use in the software.
Camera setting: NIC type - 100 full duplex should be set as well - AUTO should always be avoided.

If the IP stack jumps up and down from 10 to 100 you might just get those problems you are describing.


Basicly never have stuff at AUTO.

ignore the shipping terms, its the same price to US.. its the total price that matters, and good luck getting one delivered for less than $250.. because from what I saw, $250 was on the lowest end of the spectrum.. you could quickly pay twice that for the same thing.. at least here in the US. Ali Vendors artificially lower price and inflate shipping to get them to show up first when you sort by price, standard marketing voodoo.. just ignore it until Ali pulls its head out of its ass and changes its its sort to price+shipping and people stop doing this crap.

Considering a BI or BlueCherry license with appropriate hardware to handle 8-4k cameras and 8-4mp cameras is going to run you twice that pretty quickly.. I thought it was a great deal and used the money saved to buy a 6TB Purple.. now I have 10TB total and over 3 weeks of 24/7/365 w/7 Cams, so I am happy with the money paid and results obtained.. I've yet to take a vacation longer than 3 weeks, tho I'd like to one day

Ok great. How do you control ur setup? With the NVR UI or if I'm reading correct you have the NVR connected with Smart PSS? What's the benefits of this? Faster, options, etc? Thx for the help
