Is the AI function totally internal, or does it rely on phoning home, so to speak? I for one do not want my cameras or NVR to have access the net for anything.

All functions are run internal on camera AI processor. No cloud processing at all..
Results can be saved on internal sd-card or sent to matching Dahua NVR or compatible VMS software.

Some parts of AcuPick final processing must be done on matching Dahua NVR from 5xxx-EI line or higher...
