Recording at a higher resolution than your display is capable

I have my BI server connected to a 1080p display and also use the app on phone and tablet. Is there any decisive pro/con for setting my cameras to record at a resolution greater than 1920x1080?

I can see where it might help if I wanted to export a video to play it elsewhere, but that playback device would also require the ability to display a resolution as high or higher than my recording. Right?

It helps when zooming in... Note that higher resolution does not necessarily mean more pixels per foot.. Sometimes it just generates a larger field of view.
