What are some of the editing software you guys use? I have been using MiniTool MovieMaker. Works well to stitch together a bunch 'follow the action' type clips. It seems to do a good job, just curious if there are better ones out there before i pay for this one.

Thanks
Rif

What’s the best free video editor for h265?

I can play the clips easy enough in VLC but can’t seem to find an editor unless I convert to h264 first.

Anything actively maintained should handle H.265 without issue. It isn't exactly new.

What? OBS does video editing now?

I used Davinci Resolve once (free version) and it had a bit of a learning curve but seemed quite powerful. That is what I would go with again if I had any desire to edit videos.
I didn't know about OBS until a couple years ago. And whatever it was before, it's a video editor now. I guess the problem with just about any capable video editor is that it does have a learning curve. Having figured Sony Vegas out, though I was able to sort out the basics. And that's all I really need.
It's interesting to see other options that are available, especially the simple ones.

I use Shotcut. Free and easy to figure out. If I need to do bulk video changes or streaming I use FFMPEG from the command line.
I'll check into Shotcut. But, video conversion from the command line? No thank you...I remember the days of doing that with audio and mp3s...I'm not going back to that.

On a Macintosh, when a video doesn't need extensive editing with Final Cut Pro X, I use VideoProc Converter.

is there an easy software to edit out my half dressed fat body of our close encounter with a good size panther?
If you are not hugging the panther, it should be easy to crop you out of the video. Most video editors can probably crop.
Here's a simple example of a crop using Videoproc Vlogger software:

I couldn't recommend Vegas. I used to use it. Bought version 14 and found out that 1/2 my MP4's wouldn't load into it. Compatability issues with the format. Support didn't care as version 15 was out. They wanted me to buy the newer version which as said above is expensive and only 3 months after buying 14.

I've toyed with resolve. Very powerful and full professional tool but it's very hard to learn. Definately a learning curve. I used to like Adobe Premiere until they made their products subscription. I won't pay a subscritption for video / photo / OS software.

I have been using CyberLink Power Director 16 for a few years now. It was recommended to me by @lulu5kamz . Of course, they have a new version now. It is very powerful, but a bear to learn. I use it so infrequently, that I have to relearn some things each time.

I have no reason to think it's not safe. I have been using Videoproc Converter for years and it is great software. It has extensive support of input/output types, including DAV input, and easy, fast transcoding. It also has some editing capabilities including crop. It costs ~$29 .
I downloaded the free Videoproc Vlogger editor earlier this year, and before my first post here, I tried the Crop feature and it worked fine.
For all features, and download, see:

@CCTVCam,
I ran into the same issues with Vegas and codecs. It's no longer owned by Sony and who knows how good it is now. But, it sure seems that there is some pretty capable alternatives at least for anything I need to do now.

And don't even get me started on Adobe and their licensing. I too refuse to buy one of their subscriptions. Depending on your needs a little company called Serif makes a photo editor Affinity Photo and it's only $55. It may not be quite as powerful as Photoshop, but it's much better than Gimp. It may be worth a look.

Hey @Coldair,
If there's even a slight suspicion, I always pass an executable through VirusTotal
Several years ago, (and I may get the software wrong) I believe it was 7-zip's website was hacked and the official version of their software had a virus in it. So, it can and has happened. I used to use that software before Windows had zip baked into Windows Explorer.

For those not familiar with VirusTotal (we had a member several months back that was claiming we were telling him to go to a site with a virus LOL), but VirusTotal is a comprehensive antivirus website owned by Google that runs it thru a lot of different antivirus algorithms.

It doesn't replace a real time antivirus, but rather it is to rule out a false positive from an antivirus program that has flagged it as a potential virus. Some programs look at the total number of users and below a certain number, it is flagged. These specialty type files get false positives all the time.
