Hi everyone. been lurking a little bit and reading but it's all very confusing to me haha. hopefully fenderman or some of the experts can weight in please.

so basically i would like to set up a new system at the house. i am thinking 4-5 cameras total. based on what i read, IP cameras with POE seem to be the way to go. my criteria, if you will is as follows:

-good outdoor/ night vision quality
-motion detected recording ( i dont want to waste space recording all day)
-email alert/ remote viewing on smartphone, etc. (android)
-easy to set up

whats a good system to achieve this? i dont have a budget in mind yet. also, is it better to get bullet style or a PTZ dome camera?

will be for covering driveway, backyard, front porch area. thank you very much

A good outdoor camera (one of the most popular of Hikvision models). Night vision is good. Poe supported. There are several lens options available, if you need wide view, take 2.8mm lens but if you want to target to specific part of your garden, take some other lens (i think you can request them from seller since 2.8mm and 4mm are only available in the product selector).

NVR where you can connect up to 8 cameras, it's got 8 LAN ports where you can connect the cameras and those ports support PoE as well.

With this combination, you can also do motion detection + email alert + smartphone viewing. Just remember to buy HDD(s), that NVR supports 2x4TB HDD maxiimum.

if you are at a low budget, forget the NVR and buy MicroSD cards for the cameras (they can act as NVRs themselves, too)

olli's recommendations are solid...couple of things to note,
The nvr's with build in poe can be noisy due to the fan - they have models that dont have built in poe, you add your own switch. The 2132f-iws is a good choice since the camera supports sd card, alarm in/out, and audio (you need to add your own mic and speaker...if those functions are not important then the 2332 turret camera is a good choice as it has better ir and is less susceptible to spiders/webs causing issues it night (ir reflecting off them triggering night vision)..

wow. thank you so much. it means a lot to have 2 of the prominent members of this board weigh in. i really appreciate it its been overwhelming reading reviews and shopping around for different systems/features/ etc etc i figure the experts can easily narrow it down much better than i ever can. i will definitely look deeper at the options you suggested and probably go with it!

i am mainly using video not audio so i will look into the 2332 turret camera. thank you both again!

don't bother with the DS-2CD2132F-IWS, get the DS-2CD2332-I for the same price, much better camera!

It totally depends on user's needs and like fenderman said 2332 has better IR. But 2132 has some other features like wifi and sd card recording.

if i use poe i wont be needing wifi right
As olli says, yes that is correct..The camera allows either option..(in fact, if its like the 2432 cube, you can use wifi for data and power over poe...while wifi is not recommended some folks will only do wifi because for whatever reason they cannot get a line to the network. using a poe injector to power over poe but using wifi for data allows you to effectively have a very long power cord without using extensions or having attenuation issues)
For your application, it boils down to the 2132is having an sd card slot and audio/alarm in/out...vs better IR in the 2332...
I dont know why the dont make the 2332 with those functions...

so me being noob here, what are your thoughts on audio? i mainly want to record on motion detect because our neighbor are nosy and like to wander around, and let their pet wander into our yards too. so i didnt give much thought to audio but now you mention it.....

You would first need to check your state laws as to whether you can record audio legally...it can be nice to have though i very rarely attach a mic to a camera..the only outdoor hikvision with a built in mic is the 2532 (which has weak ir)...otherwise you need to attach a mic..

oh right haha. i will forgo the audio then.

another noob question-before powering up the camera whats the best way to test the actual field of vision before i mount it up?

hook it up directly to a laptop outside, you will need a power source like a poe switch, you can hook the camera and laptop to the switch...you will need to change your laptops ipv4 range to be in the same subnet as the camera...
you can also run a long cable from wherever the poe switch is located..

so i went and took some pictures today. do you think these angles are feasible with the 2332 turret cameras?

my plan is to try to drill through the siding and install the cameras underneath the overhang. one issue is i would like to place a camera on teh front porch but i am not sure how i would run a ethernet cable up from the porch to upstairs where the rest of the cameras will be grouped together.

if i may bug you again-is there a cheaper NVR that will work with the 2332 cameras? i rather not have to pay $67 in shipping if i can avoid it.

perhaps this one?
