Newby question here!

I recently purchased 8 cameras (IPC-HDW2231R-ZS) and one NVR (NVR5208-8P-4KS2) from Andy for my new house that 3 hour drive away. I have two cameras installed, and have "Motion Detection" enabled. The front of the house camera falses a lot (shadows) while the back camera falses very little (under porch with no shadows).

I was wonder if IVS might be a better method of detection?

What is the best methods for detecting people (cars, and animals) movement?

Any information is greatly appreciated.

Before I switched to Blue Iris, I got more reliable results using IVS and intrusion zones (with the enter and exit options both enabled, along with the “appears” option).

Not sure if things have changed, but IVS had to be setup directly on the cameras when I last used it. You could not set it all up via the NVR.
 
That would be a problem if I have to set it up on the camera since it is 190 miles away. Looks like I will have to wait until I get back over to the new house.
 
See what you can do thru the NVR, there have been a lot of firmware updates since I last used one... might work nowadays.
 
Couple of things:
- when looking at IPC-HDW2231R-ZS - your IPC cam does support IVS, that's already a first requirement
- when having your cams powered by the NVR, you can access them DIRECTLY (by using the internal NVR->POE bypass). How? Go to http://ip-of-your-NVR, login to the system. select SETUP on top bar menu (left menu by default opens on "Image-Registration"). In the bottom right menu, you should see your cams connected to your NVR. Click on the blue "IE" icon, and login with the credentials of the IPC. You can try to enable IVS over there like @aristobrat mentions
- when using the http interface of the NVR, have a look at the "Event - Smart Plan" setting: if IVS is not ticked, it will not work!!! Tick the box at the right hand side, then go one menu down ("IVS"), and make some adjustments there.

With my NVR5216, I can enable & setup IVS properly (without plugins) in SmartPSS, so that should work!

Catcamstar - amazing! Just got mine working. Could anyone advise for IVS, if the tripwire lines etc. are hard encoded into the footage? When I playback and view live they are there - anyway to hide them? Cheers!
 
I think if you right-click on playback there’s an option to not display them.

I prefer the SmartPSS software for playback: if you actually play back, you can indeed right click and "hide" the IVS tracks, however, I do prefer to show them because then you can actually see which line/intrusion box/tripwire caused the IVS event - so are able to finetune more to avoid false alarms. So they are not hardcoded in the footage stream but stored in the database inside the NVR (which keeps track of each "hourly footage file" plus "individual IVS/MoDect" tracks).

However, if you download a clip (eg in .mp4 format) from SmartPSS, all these lines disappear and will not be saved into the clip.

Reviewing footage in-browser is (at least for me) a no-go.

How do you configure the IVS directly in SmartPSS? I can do it via browser, but I can't seem to find the IVS configuration section in SmartPSS? Cheers!

Open SmartPSS
Device CFG
Choose your NVR in left menu
Choose Event right hand menu
Choose Third button: Intelligent Analysis
Choose the channel (eg your cam)
Select the man-on-the-stairs (IVS)
And pooha: - detection range / Rule config / Parameters

Everything is there! :)

It looks like a no go trying to enable IVS through the web interface. I went to event>smart plan and the IVS box was gray, I clicked on it and it turned yellow. Then I went to event>IVS and when I tried clicked on the "draw rule" it stayed gray and I couldn't draw on the anything on the video box.
 
Well, after a little work I finally got IVS enabled through the web interface.

Now the big question, is intrusion or tripwire best for detecting parameter of a entry door to a house?

I had better luck with intrusion. The camera takes time to identify objects. If the tripwire is near the edge of the screen, someone walking into the scene may cross the tripwire before the camera has identified them as an object. In that case, with tripwire, it won’t count. If you have an intrusion box and check the “appears” option, if the camera doesn’t identify an object until after its crossed into the intrusion box, then it will count.

Everyone’s results are diff, so play around and see which gets you the best results with your scenes.

I can confirm: with tripwire, EVERYTHING that trips the wire sends an alarm (eg a bird or even a shadow of a bird on the ground). You can set the direction of the tripwire, but if the bird flies the other way round, you'll get a false alarm anyhow. That's why the intrusion box can work better, like @aristobrat wrote. But it's trial and error. And you'll tweak other parameters anyhow when in summer sun is casting different shadows :)
