ivms-4500 & Ipad work at home, Hikvision NVR and camera

Frustration! I am using a Hikvision DS-7608 n2/8p NVR along with a one of their PTZ IP cameras. I thought I was standing at the gate to the Holy Land when I was first able to see and control my camera with my Ipad. Now I feel I am not near any Holy Land but rather in Hikvision Hell.

I have the iVMS 4500 settings:

alias----whatever
Register mode: IP/Domain
Address: the NVR's IP
Port: 8000

User name:OK
Password: OK


Works very well at home and only at home. I also noticed that if I get my Ipad viewing the camera's picture and I drive away, seems to be OK but really did not put much distance between me and my home. I have tried Verizon supplied network IP, local IP and ziltch.

Sure, this stuff is supposed to be PnP, could be I am in in the wrong play ground. Any suggestions to what I am doing incorrectly?

How are you accessing your NVR through your router? Do you have a port open (bad idea)? Are you using VPN (good idea)? You don’t need either if you are using your local WiFi network since you are already behind your router.
 
No port opened, that could be my problem. I am going to open ports 80 and 8000 to verify. Beyond that after reading all the concerns posted, my next step will be to look at a VPN. I am working with only one camera to get something up and functioning before doing a complete installation on my home.

Finally have it working away from home. Now I need to consider what benefits a VPN will provide. At one time in the past I used one, forgot the name it was something similar to 'hide my ip.'' What I do remember is when I selected various off shore IP origins it became a PIA. I actually stopped using it.
 
VPN is not meant to hide your IP address. It’s meant to open a secure tunnel to your router. Read the wiki on the blue bar above

As noted you are referring to the wrong type of vpn.
A proper vpn setup will provide the following benefits of a secure connection
1) your cameras will not be hacked and your video exposed
2) your cameras will not be hacked and your network and all the data therein exposed
3) your cameras will not be hacked and your cameras used to create a massive botnet to attack others
4) your cameras will not be hacked and disabled/reset to default/password changed.
If you port forward, its not a matter of if, but when you will be hacked.
 
OK.... I do not object to suggestions. Could I get some suggestions for a free or inexpensive VPN for an Ipad? I already have Milestone loaded for viewing cameras at the marina where I keep my boat. I poked around in it and I can see a conflict using or sharing that.

I believe the only way a system will work is if I can get it from Apple’s store. So if it’s not there, I think it’s out of consideration.

Putting that aside, is there a REAL problem with hacking cameras? Being new to both cameras and this forum, I have not read through the many posts here to ascertain the risk.

EDIT: FORGET a free VPN, I don’t mind paying for the service as long as it is generally reasonable

vpn is always free. you should never pay (that is fro the wrong type of vpn) read the wiki on securing your network.
The hacking threat is very real. Search the forum for hacked and backdoor.
