Paid vpn services exist to allow someone to anonymously surf the internet. The vpn client on your router provides a secure tunnel through the internet between you (when you're not at home) and your home router. These are 2 separate and very different things.

Right, that's the mixed up I had originally. My apologies to nayr and fenderman for any confusion I may have caused :D
I'd link some literature (from credible sources) in addition to the beautiful guide nayr has set up at his VPN Primer thread would be great.
I'm ready to brush up the basics and quiz myself. :D
