Europe's Forgotten Terror - The Pirates Who Enslaved a Million People
Jun 19, 2026 The History Squadcast

Who were the Barbary Pirates? For over 300 years, the Barbary Pirates terrorized coastal Europe — striking as far north as Iceland and as close to home as Ireland, England, Spain, and Italy. Men, women, and children vanished from beaches in the dead of night. Some estimates suggest more than a million Europeans were captured and sold into slavery. Yet today, few people are aware of this forgotten slave trade. In this documentary, join Kevin Hicks as he uncovers who the Barbary Pirates really were, how they built a slave-trading empire that the most powerful nations of the time struggled to stop.

This documentary, presented by Kevin Hicks of The History Squad, explores the forgotten history of the Barbary Pirates (also known as Corsairs), who terrorized coastal European communities for over 300 years.

Key Themes of the Documentary:

  • Who were the Barbary Pirates? (0:38 - 1:49) Originating from North African ports like Algiers, Tunis, Tripoli, and Morocco, these pirates began as independent raiders but later became organized, state-sponsored entities, particularly after the expansion of the Ottoman Empire.
  • The Slave Trade: (1:50 - 3:00) The primary objective of these raids was not just cargo, but capturing human beings to sell into slavery. An estimated one million Europeans were enslaved over three centuries.
  • The Baltimore Raid: (3:06 - 8:58) A detailed account of the 1631 attack on Baltimore, Ireland, where hundreds of villagers were captured, highlighting the brutal nature of these raids and the bleak fate that awaited captives as galley slaves, laborers, or domestic servants.
  • Tactics and Technology: (9:00 - 12:00) The pirates utilized shallow-drafted vessels like galleys and xebecs, which allowed them to navigate coastal inlets and rivers far from the reach of traditional navies. They also maintained a sophisticated intelligence network to identify targets.
  • Notable Figures: (20:50 - 27:00) The documentary discusses figures such as the renegade English pirate John Ward (Jack Ward) and the harrowing survival stories of individuals like Thomas Pellow and Elizabeth Marsh.
  • The End of Piracy: (28:00 - 29:30) While European nations and the newly independent United States often paid protection money (tribute) to ensure safety, the era of Barbary piracy effectively ended with the French invasion of Algeria in the early 19th century.
This video sheds light on a dark, often overlooked chapter of history where coastal communities across Europe—and as far north as Iceland—lived in constant fear of being abducted and sold.

My opinion. OPEC was a huge mistake with Iran in it and as we see now and in the past, they can control the World's economies. My prayer is we take/seize control of the Strait of Hormuz to take away their stronghold/control against the world. Negotiations with them will always fail...

I agree no control of the Strait by Iran, zero. This is not over by a long shot.

When 911 happened we had Muslim neighbors in our old neighborhood leave within a week or two afterwards. We counted 3 families move in our part of the subdivision. What was wild is we never saw them move, they must of moved in the middle of the night. Never saw moving trucks...maybe they left their stuff behind, don't know...at that time we didn't really think too much of it.

UK covering up all those rapes and now changing their laws to criminalize those speaking the Truth against Islam tells me they know there will be future attacks from Muslims....

Back then hizballah advertised that a brand new house will be given to the family of the successful suicide bomber and they actually kept their promise...
To discourage such actions, IDF were making raids to these houses, forcefully removing inhabitants and bulldozing these houses to the ground...
We all remember the media coverage about "Israelis demolishing homes of innocent civilians"

Why does Tommy Robinson believe Sikh communities have played an overlooked role in exposing grooming gang scandals? And why does he argue that some of the strongest opposition to organised child exploitation has come from ordinary people outside the political establishment?

In this explosive interview, Tommy Robinson joins Heretics to discuss the response of Sikh communities to grooming gang cases that have shocked Britain over the past two decades. Tommy argues that Sikh activists, community leaders, and local residents have often been among the most vocal critics of institutional failures and have consistently demanded greater accountability from police, politicians, and public authorities.

According to Tommy, these stories rarely receive the attention they deserve. Why have some Sikh campaigners spoken out so forcefully on these issues? What motivated them to become involved? And why does Tommy believe their contributions have been largely ignored by mainstream media coverage?

Throughout the conversation, Tommy reflects on the wider debate surrounding grooming gang investigations, public accountability, victim protection, and community activism. He discusses the role played by local communities in raising awareness, supporting victims, and pushing for difficult questions to be addressed when official responses were seen as inadequate.

What happens when ordinary citizens lose faith in institutions? Why do some communities become more willing than others to challenge authority? And what lessons can be learned from the people who refused to stay silent?

Whether you agree with Tommy Robinson or not, this episode offers a fascinating insight into one of Britain's most controversial and emotionally charged public debates. It explores questions surrounding justice, safeguarding, whistleblowing, community leadership, public trust, and the importance of protecting vulnerable children.

Tommy also explains why he believes these stories continue to resonate across Britain today. Have the underlying problems been solved? Have institutions learned from past failures? And why do discussions around these cases remain so politically sensitive?

This is a conversation packed with controversy, difficult questions, and perspectives that continue to shape debates about crime, accountability, and community action in modern Britain.

Watch now and decide for yourself.
