Which of these 3 computers for Blue Iris?

I currently have 8 Dahua Cameras, might buy a couple more. Prefer to keep mainstream saved on drive.

Dell OptiPlex 5070 Small Form Factor PC, Intel Hexa Core i5-9500 up to 4.4GHz, 16G DDR4, 512G SSD, Windows 10 Pro 64 Bit $430

I understand the Optiplexes are more solid machines? Is the 9th gen +16 worth the extra for future proofing?

Only the 8500 is a decent deal but you can usually get them for 150 160...the other 2 are ripoffs.

Optiplex 3000 series are cheaper than elitedesk. The change to 9th gen adds very little improvement almost zero. You need to go to 10th gen to see a large jump. 430 is an insane price for a 3-4 year old system. Also note the optiplex SFF has one less 3.5 HDD slot than the elite desk. No room for a second drive.

The CPU benchmark scores are close at 9776 for the 9th gen and 9584 for the 8th gen.

Close enough that "future proofing" isn't there and not worth the $250 difference.

With the use of substreams (you can still record 24/7 mainstream if you wish), an 8th gen is more than adequate. And it can be upgraded to Win11 at some point if there is a need.

Heck people run 50 cameras on a 4th gen just fine LOL.

Somebody found a 4th gen at a government auction for $25 and is more than enough.

So debating between an 8th gen or 9th gen for future proofing just isn't a valid argument.

Yes, that's a rip off. You can get a computer with a 12th Gen i5-12400 on dell outlet for $465 right now, and that's not even a great price as far as dell outlet goes.
$35 more and you get a CPU that's twice as powerful, 3 years newer, and like new not previously used for 3 years.

Either will work, it's a question of how much you want to spend and how big of a computer you want. Another potential option is to retire a desktop you currently use by shifting it's use to Blue Iris.

The outlet machine I referenced was a larger Inspiron desktop that iirc can accommodate (1) 3.5" HDD.

I don't have an old desktop unfortunately, just a new one. Would it be possible to get multiple drives into an inspiron using duct tape or such? I have a couple of purples I'd like to repurpose rather than buying one big one

Buy an Elitedesk SFF with an i5-8500, if you are patient, you can get them for $150 or less.
They have proven themselves to be good BI machines.
Set up a watch list on Ebay.
