Looks like a hack or serious bug in old Western Digital My book devices:

“I’m totally screwed.” WD My Book Live users wake up to find their data deleted

Storage-device maker advises customers to unplug My Book Lives from the Internet ASAP.

I never use any of the crapware that comes with hard drives and this seems to be an example of why that may be a good practice.
