Getting the hang of it

Hello All,

I have a Synology DSM which is how I view all my Hikvision cams. I am going to be getting a few more cams and am on the fence about purchasing more licenses compared to just purchasing Blue Iris and run a VM on the Synology DSM and just record to the NAS since the VM will be on at all times with the server.

My question is, depending on which solution I decide to go with, I wanted to know how can I go about setting up a VLAN.

My topology is as follows:
Optimum Modem > Nighthawk x6 R8000 Router > Netgear 24-port Switch (GS724Tv4) > TP-Link 8-port POE Switch (TL-SG1008PE)

The Hikvision cams are connected throughout the house to the TP-Link POE Switch (TL-SG1008PE) in order to avoid running power cables to all.

Since I am not very network inclined past the basic stuff, I would appreciate some help with setting a VLAN.
Also, perhaps someone can explain in simple terms as to what a VLAN is and what are its benefits compared to not going the VLAN route.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you don't know what a VLAN is, I wouldn't recommend trying to set one up. It can get pretty involved.
