I thought this option was added a few updates ago, but I'm not seeing it. I updated to the latest version today and still do not see it. There is a continuous + alerts option instead but that's not what I want for dual-stream recording. I want substream until a camera triggers, then switch to main stream. Then I only want alert notifications to my phone if something I'm interested in is identified. And keep recording main stream until the camera is no longer being triggered. So what happened to this option? I can get around this by having a cloned camera only record the substream continuous, but it not as elegant.

The feature has been renamed as explained in the help file and release notes.
Continuous + alerts. When used with a dual-streaming camera along with direct-to-
disc, the result is a BVR file which will contain the sub-stream continuously
recorded, but the main-stream only recorded when the camera is in a triggered state
(or alerted state if you are using alert confirmation via AI). During main-stream
playback, the sub-stream will be upsampled whenever the main-stream is not
available. This dual-stream hybrid may be exported only when re-encoding is
selected, although you may still export the main-stream in segments when not re-
encoding. When not using dual-streams or direct-to-disc, a frame will be captured
continuously at 1fps unless the camera is triggered.
It has changed names to continuous + alerts and does what you want - records substream until a trigger and then switches to mainstream - alerts word here is different than alerting you with a push or notification...two separate items.
Very confusing wording. I read that to mean that when using AI to confirm alerts, it won't record the main stream until such confirmation. But thanks, I'll try it.

not confusing at all, that is why the word "or" is used and the entire statement is in parenthesis.
Well it's still not working the way I'd like it to. When the AI detects a target object (person), the alert clip is exactly what I want. It starts playing the main stream a few seconds before the motion triggers and through the event. So I see the whole thing in high quality and a notification is pushed to my phone. But if the AI doesn't identify an object, the recorded clip doesn't switch to the main stream until 7-8 seconds after the motion trigger (I use a 5 second pre-trigger buffer). For example, when a dog goes through the scene, or me on a riding mower (which the AI often has a hard time with). Often the main event is over by the time the recording switches to main stream. Not sure why as it should be buffering all the time.
Other times, there is an alert in the alerts list but where the AI hasn't identified anything. This is usually an overlapping event. An example of this is when my wife walks into view and triggers the camera and AI tags a person. But in the background I'm riding the mower in the trigger zone. In this case I get 2 clips in the alerts list. The first is main stream of my wife who enters the area and then leaves. The second is after she leaves but my motion is still triggering the camera. That clip is sub stream even though it's being recorded as a motion event and is listed in the alerts list.
What I want to happen is for the main stream to be recorded whenever the motion detector triggers based on the settings I have working well. But I don't want to be notified unless AI detects what I'm looking for. I still want the "false" events to record at higher quality because the AI is not always correct. And sometimes unexpected things happen that I'd like to have a higher quality recording of. But I don't need "on alerts" actions for those.

This is because you've incorrectly selected that option in the AI settings and did not leave them on default. Blue Irish does have the option for it to work as you describe but that's not what you're looking for and the default is not set that way. It is very important to make sure you look at your selections when you click on options and understand what they mean before selecting them.
Can you at least point me in the right direction then? What specific AI settings are you referring to? I read the help file on all of this and thought I had a handle on what the settings mean. But I must be missing the obvious.
