Recommend a IP camera for landscape shots

Hi everyone.

I have been thinking about doing this for a few years now, i think its time i did it.

My house overlooks a beach and during the summer months gets swamped with tourists and in the winter its like a ghost town. I would like to setup a IP camera on my highest gable end and take a photo every X minutes to build up a time lapse movie over the course of the year / months etc.

Would this be f any use to me ?

i know i would need to get a regulated power adapter and POE switch. It would all be hardwired, no wifi. Not sure how i would collect the photos just yet. this is just the basic concept.

I didnt know how much of an angle i would get from the camera. Can you get wide angle cameras ? Could i fit 2 cameras and then stitch the images together (that could get very cumbersome and messy)

Just like to hear your thoughts and any info and pointers you may have.

I take it it's more for fun then security and night vision might not be important. This will do fine, but personally I would consider more pixels and go with 4k cam for landscape purpose as it will give plenty of detail with 2.8mm wide angle. I have 5MP camera and it's not enough to do beautiful detailed landscape shots.

The most cost effective 4k cam is Longse, I think it's around $150. It has very detailed and clean image for daytime landscape:

I wasnt aware you could get 4k, thats cool.

Yeah night vision is not needed nor is PTZ.

can you get them in dome versions ? i ask as it not sheltered at all and a dome would be more resistant to the wind than a bullet.

especially if i do manage to get a full year then the images should be nearly the same

Do you do time lapse ? what sort of setup do you use if you dont mind me asking

For really nice timelapse, get a fairly cheap cannon camera, stuff it with memory and load this onto it: http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/CHDK

You can run it entirely off battery, or hardwire it in for power.. extract the images and build em into a movie when its done, you can also extract em via USB so you dont touch the camera and change its FOV..

This will let you get some really nice high quality timelapse in the 12MP or higher range on a budget... landscape timelapse with a real photo camera can get really amazing results.

as an added bonus you can set them up to detect and capture lightning.

Yes they have domes as well. I used to do landscape time lapses but with regular point and shoot cams because they had much better detail and quality but newer 4k ip cams it might be worth a shot

One benefit of Hikvision is they can upload an image periodically to an FTP server. So all you need is a camera and an FTP server.

Can a Longse do FTP image uploads on an interval like that?

Dahua has 4K cameras readily available, though you probably can't get it cheaply in the UK, and they don't support FTP so you would need some other timelapse building software that can use IP cameras. The snapshot URL for a Dahua 4K camera is http://address/cgi-bin/snapshot.cgi (requires http authentication)

+1 for a canon camera with CHDK. Unbeatable quality there, but kind of a pain in my experience. I tried it once and discovered my camera wouldn't turn back on after power loss unless I pressed the power button.

Longse has FTP image upload jpeg or avi and you can set when to upload as well, but I haven't tested how well it works on my cam
