I have a brand-new starlight 4K turret camera from Empiretech. Really struggled to connect for a number of hours due to the static IP address. Much more trouble than with my other cameras. But I got it working, now under DHCP in my IPCam Vlan. Indoor photos look good (other than what appears to be a few dead pixels).

I have failed, however, to connect to a stream using VLC. I'm a Frigate user, and if VLC won't work there is no point in trying to integrate with Frigate.

I've tried both RTSP and RTMP. Let me focus on just the RTSP for now. FYI I've emailed admin@empiretech01.com, but I don't know how often that address is monitored. I'm new to this brand.

I followed this guide: Dahua Wiki Remote Access RTSP via VLC

I confirmed the bitrate for the main channel at 4096, with H264 compression.

When I specify the stream rtsp:/<username>:<password>@<ip address>:554/cam/realmonitor?channel=1&subtype=0, I get a popup window asking for Username and Password. These do not work (popup displays again with a blank password field).

I have tried this URL without <username>:<password> and I get the same popup with the same result. I also tried variants suggested by the Wiki page.

-> I wonder if my password is a problem. It contains the characters: & ; ) I tried to change the password using the web interface, however it reported to me that the password was incorrect and after trying again a few times, I have two attempts left. I am very certain I typed the old password correctly (even pasted from a text editor to be sure), and I am also certain that the new passwords match and meet criteria. So I did not succeed in changing the password. (But I can log into the web interface with no problems.)

I would sincerely appreciate some guidance from members of this forum. Lots of good experience here. :)

I've corresponded with Andy, who suggested I reset the device and start with a simple password. That did the trick, I now have a working RTSP stream.

So, for me at least, I will avoid using special characters in my passwords for Dahua.

My compliments to Andy for prompt replies on the weekend. :)
